The Church on a Long Drift

Overview:

The pull of false teaching has never been more prevalent. But false teaching isn’t a new phenomenon. The apostle Paul addressed it fiercely and frequently throughout the New Testament. Examining Acts 19–20 and Revelation 2, Pastor Chuck Swindoll takes us to an intimate conversation between this beloved apostle and the elders of Ephesus. How did he warn them before he left them? Listen in and learn how you and your church can stay true to your first love, Jesus your Savior and Master!

Message Summary:

In this sobering message, Chuck Swindoll addresses the subtle and dangerous reality of spiritual erosion. He defines "the long drift" not as a sudden or intentional departure from the truth, but as a slow, almost imperceptible movement away from a church's original moorings. Using the metaphor of a ship slowly losing its anchor, Chuck warns that even the strongest ministries can find themselves "adrift" if they fail to remain vigilant. He emphasizes that God’s Word was given not just to satisfy curiosity, but to be "eaten"—assimilated and obeyed—to provide the spiritual stability necessary to resist the currents of a compromise-driven culture.

The heart of the sermon focuses on Paul’s emotional farewell to the Ephesian elders in Acts 20. Chuck highlights Paul’s solemn charge to these leaders to "be on guard" for themselves and the flock, knowing that "savage wolves" would eventually emerge from both outside and within the church to distort the truth. By connecting this warning to the later "loveless" state of the Ephesian church in Revelation 2, Chuck illustrates that the primary cause of decline is rarely theological error at first, but rather a loss of "first love" for Christ. The message concludes with a call for personal and corporate soul-searching, reminding the congregation that churches do not erode—people do.

Message Key Facts:

  • "Eat This Book": Chuck references a book by Eugene Peterson, reminding the audience that Scripture is meant to be digested and lived out, not just studied as an academic exercise.
  • The Farewell at Miletus: The sermon reconstructs the poignant scene where Paul, knowing he would never see the Ephesian elders again, calls them to the coast to deliver his final, urgent warnings.
  • Savage Wolves: Paul warns that after his departure, "wolves" would enter the flock. Chuck explains that these are often charismatic leaders who draw disciples away to themselves rather than to Christ.
  • The Ephesian Drift: Chuck tracks the history of the church in Ephesus—from the power and miracles of Acts 19 to the warning of erosion in Acts 20, and finally to the "loss of first love" described by Jesus in Revelation 2.
  • The "No Hook" Principle (Context): Reaffirming themes from earlier in the series, Chuck notes that the best defense against erosion is a life of integrity that offers "no hook" for corruption or compromise.

Message References:

  • Acts 20:28–32: The primary charge to the elders to be on guard, to shepherd the church, and to rely on the "word of His grace."
  • Revelation 2:1–7: The letter to the church in Ephesus, praising their hard work but rebuking them for having abandoned their first love.
  • Jeremiah 15:16: The prophet’s testimony about "eating" God’s words and finding them to be a joy and a heart’s delight.
  • Hebrews 2:1: The warning that we must pay more careful attention to what we have heard, so that we do not "drift away."
  • Proverbs 4:23: The exhortation to "guard your heart with all diligence," for it is the source of life's direction.
