Overview:

Numbers 21:4–9; John 3:14–16

Do you ever get in moods where you see only half-empty glasses . . . only careless mistakes . . . only stupid decisions . . . as if nothing is going right in the world?

In Numbers 21, the Israelites started to focus only on their obstacles. They grew tired of God’s manna and griped against Moses. What’s more, they griped against God. So, He sent poisonous snakes to wake them from their disobedience! However, God also displayed abundant grace by providing them a means to be healed from the deadly snakebites.

Chuck Swindoll encourages us to live with eyes that see light and color in God’s creation rather than darkness and gray. Learn to look to Jesus when your attitude dims. He will animate your spirit because He is the author and perfecter of your faith.

Message Summary:

In this message addressing the dangers of spiritual immaturity and the simplicity of grace, Chuck Swindoll takes the listener from the wilderness of Numbers 21 to the theology of John 3, concluding with a historical warning from 2 Kings 18. He characterizes the Israelites as "perpetual whiners" who, despite eating miracle food and following a divine GPS (the pillar of cloud and fire), failed to grow up. Swindoll notes that this text marks the eleventh time the people complained against God, prompting Him to discipline them by sending venomous "fiery serpents" into the camp. Swindoll highlights the pivotal moment when the people finally repent, admitting, "We have sinned." In response, God provides a cure that defies human logic: Moses is to craft a bronze serpent and lift it on a pole. The remedy for the deadly poison was not a complex ritual or a promise of better behavior, but a simple act of faith: "Look and live." Swindoll connects this directly to Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus in John 3, explaining that just as the serpent was lifted up, the Son of Man must be lifted up, offering eternal life to anyone who simply believes [57–63]. The sermon concludes with a surprising and necessary warning against idolatry. Fast-forwarding 700 years to 2 Kings 18, Swindoll reveals that the Israelites had turned the bronze serpent—once a tool of God’s grace—into an idol of worship. King Hezekiah had to destroy it, calling it "Nehushtan" (a mere chunk of bronze). Swindoll uses this to urge modern believers not to fetishize buildings, relics, or past spiritual experiences, but to keep their focus on the Giver rather than the gift [71–77].

Message Key Facts:

  • The "Eleventh Verse": Swindoll counted the complaints of the Israelites in the wilderness (using Ryrie's Study Bible) and found that Numbers 21 represents the 11th time they grumbled against God. He compares this to a camp song that never ends, illustrating their refusal to mature [26–27].
  • The Clothesline Illustration: To illustrate God’s discipline, Swindoll recalls his father training a dog not to chase cars by attaching it to a clothesline. When the dog ran, it eventually reached the end of the leash and was jerked back. Similarly, God sent the serpents because the Israelites had finally "reached the end of their leash" [34–35].
  • Leadership Lesson: Swindoll points out that Moses’ "stock goes up 10 notches" because he interceded for the very people who had just prayed against him. He offers a maxim for leaders: "As a leader, you will be criticized by those who later will need your help." A godly leader must forgive and help them anyway.
  • The Three Aspects of the Cure: Swindoll notes three specific characteristics of the bronze serpent remedy:
    1. Unlimited Offer: "Everyone who is bitten" could look.
    2. Identical Cure: Everyone had to do the same thing—"Look."
    3. Complete Result: "He shall live." There was no "lordship looking" or requirement of long stares; a simple look of faith was sufficient [57–59].
  • "Pain Plants the Flag": Swindoll shares a favorite aphorism: "Pain plants the flag of reality in the fortress of a rebel heart." He notes that the deadly snakes, while severe, were necessary to wake the people up to their sin [38–39].
  • Nehushtan: In 2 Kings 18:4, Hezekiah breaks the bronze serpent because the people were burning incense to it. He called it Nehushtan, which translates to "a chunk of bronze." Swindoll applies this to the church's move to a new building, warning the congregation not to idolize the old furniture or the new facility [75–76].
  • 11 Rules of Life: Swindoll reads a list of "11 things you did not learn in school" (often attributed to Bill Gates) to illustrate that life is not fair and the world does not care about your self-esteem, contrasting this reality with the immaturity of the Israelites [18–21].

Message References:

  • Numbers 21:4–9: The narrative of the Israelites complaining, the judgment of the fiery serpents, and the provision of the bronze serpent [2–4].
  • John 3:14–16: Jesus explains the typology of the serpent to Nicodemus: "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up" [4, 62–63].
  • 2 Kings 18:4: The account of King Hezekiah destroying the bronze serpent because it had become an idol [71–72].
  • Proverbs 16:7: "When a man's ways please the Lord, he will make even his enemies to be at peace with him" (referenced regarding Moses praying for his detractors).

I am an intern Bible school student now, and I've been reading the book Improving Your Serve. I considered the book as God's resource for me to learn that there are struggles and pain in serving Him, from rejection and from other people's criticism. As a young lady who wants to serve God, the book added to my courage knowing that God holds my victory. —V. C. from The Philippines
