A Letter for Then and Now

Overview:

The Bible reverberates in the lives of people today with the same force and illumination it did when its authors first spoke, “Thus says the Lord of Hosts.” Paul’s concise, yet hard-hitting letter to the Colossian church focuses its Christian readers on their identity in Jesus and the lifelong benefits of a relationship with Him. Join Pastor Chuck Swindoll in this first of ten messages on Colossians as he shares the advantages of following God’s life-giving Word. This sermon on Colossians 1:1–8 is certain to encourage and inspire you as you follow hard after Jesus Christ.

Message Summary:

In this foundational and stabilizing message, Chuck Swindoll introduces the book of Colossians, a letter written nearly two thousand years ago that remains "phenomenally remarkable" for the 21st-century believer. He begins by establishing the eternal relevance of the Word of God, citing Romans 15:4 to remind us that whatever was written in earlier times was designed for our learning, comfort, and hope. Chuck argues that we often approach the New Testament as a dusty historical record, but in reality, it is a "love letter" specifically addressed to the complexities of our modern lives. This study serves as a spiritual anchor, moving the believer away from the "instability" of cultural trends and toward a "Resident Dynamic" of truth that provides a reason to "go on" even when the world seems to have lost its way.

The core of the teaching focuses on the historical and theological setting of Colossae. Chuck observes that by the time Paul wrote this letter from a Roman prison, Colossae had become a "third-rate city"—a declining "hick town" in the Lycus Valley compared to its more prosperous neighbors, Laodicea and Hierapolis. Yet, it was in this small, overlooked location that a dangerous "heresy" was brewing—a toxic mix of legalism, mysticism, and "Christ-plus" philosophy. By examining the transition from the "empty" promises of the world to the "all-sufficient" reality of Christ, Chuck reveals that the primary theme of Colossians is the absolute preeminence of the Savior. The goal of this message is to prepare the believer for a "radically transformed life," moving us from "mystical mumbling" toward a stable, confident assurance in the Lord.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Strategy of the "Third-Rate" City: Chuck highlights the fascinating geography of the Lycus Valley. While Paul spent three years in Ephesus, he never actually visited Colossae. The church was founded by Epaphras, a "fellow worker" who brought the Gospel back to his hometown. Chuck uses this to show that the Spirit’s "Resident Dynamic" often works most powerfully in the small, unremarkable places of life through the witness of common people.
  • The Anatomy of the Colossian Heresy: A major highlight is Chuck’s analysis of the "pollution" threatening the church. He describes it as a "syncretistic" philosophy—a blend of Jewish legalism, Eastern mysticism (angel worship), and Gnostic "secret knowledge." This heresy suggested that Christ was "not enough" and that believers needed additional "ecstatic surges" or "ascetic rules" to be truly spiritual. Chuck warns that this same "Christ-plus" mindset is the "cancer" of modern theology.
  • The Prison-Bound Author: Chuck points out the irony of the letter’s origin. Paul was not writing from a plush study or a position of Earthly power; he was a "prisoner of the Lord" in Rome, chained to a guard. Yet, his spirit was free. Chuck argues that the "Harbor Pilot" of the Spirit allowed Paul to see the "big picture" of the church's danger even while his own physical movements were restricted.
  • The Purpose of the "Intake": Chuck emphasizes the transforming power of the Word. He quotes a theologian who noted that "theological expertise is not the end, but the means to an end—a radically transformed life." He challenges the listener to get serious about their "intake" of Scripture, promising that a consistent diet of truth over ten weeks will change a person's character so significantly that "people will notice."
  • The Filter of the Mind: Chuck discusses the role of Colossians as an "Air Conditioner" for the soul. Just as an air conditioner filters out the heat and humidity of a Texas summer, the truths of this letter filter out the "disturbing era" of secularism and "practical atheism" that surrounds the believer. It provides the "inner filter" needed to detect error and maintain a "long obedience in the same direction."
  • Stability in a Shifting World: The sermon concludes with a call to "be still and know that I am God." Chuck notes that the goal of studying this letter is to move from being "tossed to and fro" by every wind of doctrine to becoming "stable and assured." He asserts that when Christ is reclaimed as the center of our worship, the "panic" of life is replaced by a "quiet calm" and a "settled confidence."

Message References:

  • Colossians 1:1–2: The opening salutation. Chuck highlights the title of "Saints and faithful brethren," noting that our identity is not based on our performance but on our position "in Christ."
  • Romans 15:4: The foundational doctrine of relevance. Chuck uses this to show that the Old and New Testaments provide the "patience and comfort" needed to maintain hope in any century.
  • Psalm 46:10: The command to "Be still and know that I am God." Chuck links this to the "rest" found in the sufficiency of Christ, contrasting it with the "frantic activity" of legalistic religion.
  • Acts 19:10: A reference to the spread of the Gospel in Asia. Chuck uses this to explain how the church at Colossae likely began through the influence of Paul’s ministry in Ephesus.
  • John 14:6: Reaffirming the exclusivity of the "Way, the Truth, and the Life." Chuck connects this to the Colossian struggle, proving that if Jesus is everything, then "Christ-plus" is nothing.
  • Psalm 42:1–2: The cry of the "thirsty soul." Chuck notes that the letter to the Colossians is the "living water" that satisfies the spiritual hunger that "mystical mumbling" can never reach.
  • 2 Timothy 3:16–17: The promise that all Scripture is "God-breathed" and profitable for "teaching, reproof, and correction." Chuck uses this to support the "transformation of the mind" that occurs through a 10-week study of the Word.

I looked you all up on Spotify and clicked on the Insight for Living link. It hit me like a brick in the face; the title of the very top episode was "Dealing with Discouragement." I listened to the episode on my drive home. I 100% believe it was God speaking to me and bringing me back from a life in darkness. I felt like it was God telling me, "This is the path and plan I have for you so keep going." —R. Y. from Georgia
