A Message from Chuck: The Anchor of Objective Truth
Have you ever sat in a small group where everyone takes turns reading a verse and then sharing “what this verse means to me”? It sounds very inclusive and warm, doesn’t it? But friend, if we aren’t careful, that approach can lead us into a dangerous fog of subjectivism. If a verse can mean whatever we want it to mean, then it ultimately means nothing at all. God didn’t write a “choose your own adventure” book; He wrote a revelation with a specific message.
In this video, we are looking at a foundational rule of interpretation: Seek a Single Meaning.
Before we ever ask, “What does this say to me?” we must first ask, “What did the author mean when he wrote this to his original audience?” There is one meaning, but there can be many, many applications. We’ll explore:
- The Danger of Subjectivism: Why letting our feelings dictate the meaning of the text leads to spiritual instability and confusion.
- The Author’s Intent: How to use the context, the culture, and the language to discover the one true point the Holy Spirit was making through the biblical writer.
- The Difference Between Meaning and Application: Learning that while the meaning of a passage is fixed and unchangeable, the application is as broad as the needs of the human heart.
Don’t settle for “your” truth when you can have The Truth. Let’s learn how to anchor our faith in the single, intended meaning of God’s Word.
