The Spirit Reveals What’s Hidden

For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. (1 Corinthians 2:10 NASB)

The Spirit of God is the One who gleans truth from within the Godhead and then reveals this wisdom to individuals like you and me. Thanks to the Holy Spirit, such deep truths are deposited into our minds. Without the Helper’s supernatural assistance, we’re sunk! He must reveal, or we don’t receive.

I sometimes think of the Holy Spirit as a deep-sea diver who goes to the depths searching for treasures. The diver drops off the side of the boat. As the bubbles rise to the water’s surface, he drops deeper, deeper, deeper probing through all the mysteries of the deep that the human eye cannot see from above. Finally, he surfaces again, bringing with him treasures from some sunken vessel. Sometimes the treasures are so precious they are priceless. Without the diver, however, they would remain hidden forever.

The Spirit of God, in the same manner, searches the deepest realms of the wisdom of God to lift out truths we need to know and understand. He not only digs them up, He is able to bring them to our attention. What a magnificently important work!

Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! For who has known the mind of the lord, or who became his counselor? Or who has first given to him that it might be paid back to him again? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen. (Romans 11:33–36 NASB)

Theology has been called “the queen of the sciences.” Before it, all other earthly truths must bow. Only those who have a grasp of the wisdom and the magnificent, profound, unfathomable plan of God can fit truth into its proper place in whatever era they may live.

A true education occurs when theology is given its proper priority. Our forefathers knew that. That is why, when the earliest universities were founded, it was for the purpose of establishing a literate and learned ministry, so that the people might continue to keep the wisdom of God in focus with the needs of human beings.
