Why Leaders Crack Up

Overview:

Exodus 18

As the nation’s leader, Moses soon found himself caught up in the details of governance all day, every day.

Moses’ father-in-law Jethro quickly observed that Moses was on a fast track to burnout. No matter how wise and capable he was, Moses couldn’t shoulder all the administrative responsibilities on his own.

Pastor Chuck Swindoll applies practical lessons from Exodus 18 for anyone in a leadership capacity. With biblical wisdom, take stock of the essentials God has called you to and determine to delegate the rest!

Message Summary:

In this fourteenth message of the series Moses: A Man of Selfless Dedication, Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores a critical moment of near-burnout in the life of Moses. Faced with the overwhelming responsibility of judging every dispute for millions of Israelites, Moses was “cracking up” under the pressure. This study of Exodus 18 reveals the vital importance of delegation, the wisdom of outside counsel, and the necessity of shared leadership in the life of a servant of God.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Burden: Moses was attempting to serve as the sole judge for the entire nation, sitting from morning until evening to hear the people’s disputes.

  • The Outside Perspective: Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, observed this unsustainable pace and warned him: “The thing that you are doing is not good. You will surely wear out” (Exodus 18:17–18).

  • The Solution: Jethro proposed a tiered system of leadership, appointing “men of truth” to serve as rulers of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.

  • The Qualifications: The leaders chosen to assist Moses had to meet four specific criteria: they must be able men, fear God, be men of truth, and hate dishonest gain.

Message References:

Primary Scripture Reference: Exodus 18
  • Exodus 18:13–16: The description of Moses’ grueling daily schedule and his attempt to do everything himself.

  • Exodus 18:17–23: Jethro’s intervention and his practical plan for delegating authority to qualified leaders.

  • Exodus 18:24–26: Moses’ humble response to counsel and the implementation of the new judicial system.

  • Exodus 18:27: The graceful departure of Jethro after providing his life-saving advice.

Lessons on Preventing Burnout

Pastor Chuck Swindoll identifies key principles for leaders and individuals who feel overwhelmed by responsibility:

  1. Identify the Signs of Exhaustion: Burnout often starts with the belief that we are indispensable. We must recognize when our “dedicated” pace has become a destructive one.

  2. Be Open to Objective Counsel: Moses was a great prophet, yet he was humble enough to listen to the practical advice of his father-in-law. Even the most spiritual leaders need “Jethros” in their lives.

  3. The Art of Delegation: Effective leadership is not about doing everything yourself; it is about empowering others to share the load. Delegation is a sign of strength, not weakness.

  4. Shared Responsibility Protects the Mission: By distributing the workload, the people’s needs were met more efficiently, and Moses was preserved to focus on his primary calling—representing the people before God.

I am an intern Bible school student now, and I've been reading the book Improving Your Serve. I considered the book as God's resource for me to learn that there are struggles and pain in serving Him, from rejection and from other people's criticism. As a young lady who wants to serve God, the book added to my courage knowing that God holds my victory. —V. C. from The Philippines
