When Unexpected Tests Rattle Our World

Overview:

For decades, Abraham waited on God to fulfill His promise. After the gift of Isaac arrived, however, God asked Abraham to give him back.

It’s easy to trust God about little things. But giving God our everything? That takes faith!

Join Pastor Chuck Swindoll as he retraces the steps of Abraham and his beloved son, Isaac. Observe how Abraham’s response to God was immediate, based upon faith alone, and total. Heaven’s commands come with heaven’s provision!

Message Summary:

In this gripping and deeply moving message, Chuck Swindoll takes us to the heights of Mount Moriah to witness the ultimate test of faith: God’s command for Abraham to sacrifice his son, Isaac. Chuck observes that while we often talk about “faith” in the abstract, God frequently brings “unexpected tests” that rattle the very foundations of our security. He argues that these tests are not for God’s benefit—since He already knows the end from the beginning—but for ours. They are designed to reveal the true state of our hearts and to answer a single, piercing question: Does God truly have first place in our lives? This study serves as a theological anchor for anyone currently facing a “pop quiz” from heaven that seems both impossible and heartbreaking.

The core of the teaching explores the “Resident Dynamic” of the Holy Spirit as the source of stability when our world is turned upside down. Chuck notes that Abraham did not have the luxury of a long explanation; he was simply given a command that contradicted every promise he had lived for. By examining Abraham’s silent, immediate obedience, Chuck reveals that the secret to passing these rattling tests is the willingness to “release” our grip on the things (or people) we love most. The goal of this message is to encourage believers to stop resisting the test and instead trust in the “Harbor Pilot” who navigates us through the fog of confusion toward the realization that God is, and must be, our “all in all.”

Message Key Facts:

  • The Anatomy of a Surprise Test: Chuck highlights that God’s tests rarely come with a warning. After decades of walking with God, Abraham is called in the middle of a routine day and told to do the unthinkable. Chuck emphasizes that God targeted the one thing Abraham loved most—his son Isaac, the child of promise. This illustrates that divine testing often touches our “Isaac”—that person, position, or possession that has subtly taken first place in our hearts.
  • The 3-Day Silent Journey: A major highlight is Chuck’s reflection on the three-day journey to Moriah. He imagines the “minor key” of those seventy-two hours—the silence between father and son, the weight of the wood, and the internal battle Abraham fought with every step. Chuck suggests that the hardest part of any test is the “middle ground” where we must persevere in obedience before the outcome is visible.
  • Faith as a “Plural” Perspective: Chuck points to a vital detail in Genesis 22:5: Abraham tells his servants, “We will worship and we will return.” Drawing from the New Testament’s commentary on this event, Chuck explains that Abraham’s faith was so robust that he believed even if he carried out the sacrifice, God was able to raise Isaac from the dead. This “resurrection faith” allowed Abraham to move forward when logic failed.
  • The Altar of Release: Chuck explores the moment on the mountain when the knife was raised. He clarifies that God never intended for Isaac to die; He intended for Abraham’s attachment to Isaac to die. The test was won the moment Abraham released Isaac in his heart. Chuck challenges the congregation to identify their own “Isaac” and to recognize that we only truly enjoy what we have fully surrendered to God’s control.
  • Jehovah Jireh (The Lord Will Provide): The climax of the story is the appearance of the ram caught in the thicket. Chuck emphasizes that God’s provision always meets us at the point of our obedience. He notes that “Jehovah Jireh” doesn’t just mean God provides “things,” but that He provides Himself as the substitute and the source of our strength in the middle of the rattling test.
  • The Harbor Pilot of Character: Revisiting his central series analogy, Chuck describes the Spirit as the “Pilot” who stands on the bridge of our lives during an unexpected storm. When our emotions are “rattled” and we are prone to wander, the Spirit provides a “quiet calm,” reminding us of God’s character and empowering us to release our wills to the Father’s sovereign plan.

Message References:

  • Genesis 22:1–14: The primary narrative text. Chuck walks through the call, the journey, the conversation between father and son, and the divine intervention that established Abraham as the “father of all who believe.”
  • Hebrews 11:17–19: The New Testament “divine commentary” on the Moriah event. Chuck uses this to show that Abraham’s obedience was fueled by a belief in God’s power to resurrect and fulfill His promises against all odds.
  • James 1:2–4: The instruction on the purpose of testing. Chuck links Abraham’s experience to the “testing of faith” that produces endurance and spiritual wholeness.
  • Romans 8:32: The ultimate parallel. Chuck notes that while God spared Abraham’s son, He “did not spare His own Son,” proving that the provision on Moriah was a foreshadowing of the sacrifice on Calvary.
  • Psalm 139:23–24: The prayer of surrender. Chuck encourages the listener to invite the Spirit to “search me” and “test me,” recognizing that the goal of every test is to lead us in the “way everlasting.”
  • Proverbs 3:5–6: The practical application for a rattling world. Chuck reaffirms that we must “lean not on our own understanding” when the test makes no sense, trusting instead that the Lord will “make our paths straight.”
