When Disappointment Leads to Doubt

Overview:

Matthew 11:2–11

Imprisoned and discouraged, John the Baptizer sent for Jesus to inquire if He really was who He said He was. What do we do when Jesus doesn’t meet our expectations? Thankfully, we have Jesus’ response to John the Baptizer preserved, which is instructive for those who struggle with spiritual doubt in our day. Pastor Chuck Swindoll carefully examines the subject of doubt through the lens of Matthew 11:2–11 to draw out vital principles that help us address and overcome doubt in our lives.

Message Summary:

In this message, Charles Swindoll explores the common human experience of doubt, specifically when it arises from deep disappointment and unmet expectations. Using the story of John the Baptist from Matthew 11, Swindoll illustrates that even the most faithful and spiritually robust individuals are not immune to questioning God when their reality doesn’t align with their anticipation. He describes the “domino effect” of doubt—starting with a thought, building into an expectation, and eventually crashing into disillusionment and disappointment when God’s timing or methods differ from our own.

Swindoll emphasizes that Jesus does not respond to John’s doubt with shame or condemnation. Instead, Jesus points to the evidence of His works and offers a unique beatitude: “Blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.” The sermon serves as a reminder that doubt is often a symptom of our limited horizontal perspective. By choosing to trust in God’s sovereign plan—even when the light at the end of the tunnel is obscured—believers can move toward spiritual maturity rather than falling into the destructive trap of cynicism.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Syndrome of Doubt: Swindoll defines doubt as a process of “dominoes”:
    1. A Thought
    2. Anticipation
    3. Imagination/Expectation
    4. Reality (which differs from expectation)
    5. Disillusionment
    6. Disappointment
    7. Doubt.
  • The Example of John the Baptist: John was in a dungeon (Machaerus) because he spoke the truth about Herod’s adultery. Despite being the “Forerunner,” he languished in prison while Jesus performed miracles elsewhere, leading to his question: “Are You the Messiah… or should we keep looking?”
  • Jesus’ Response: Jesus did not rebuke John; He performed miracles in front of John’s disciples and sent them back with proof and a blessing for those who remain steadfast despite disappointment.
  • Qualities of Greatness: Jesus called John the greatest man born of women, highlighting three traits:
    1. A man of strong convictions.
    2. A man of genuine self-denial.
    3. A man true to his calling.
  • Doubt vs. Cynicism: Swindoll warns that while doubt is a natural part of being human, lingering in it without seeking God leads to cynicism—a state where one no longer wants answers but simply wants to “throw rocks” at the truth.

Message References:

  • Matthew 11:2–11: The primary text detailing John the Baptist’s inquiry from prison and Jesus’ commendation of him.
  • Luke 7:18–23: The parallel account of John’s disciples questioning Jesus, noting that Jesus performed many miracles “at that very moment.”
  • Isaiah 35:5–6 / Isaiah 61:1: Referenced implicitly through Jesus’ list of miracles (blind seeing, lame walking), which fulfilled Messianic prophecies.
  • Matthew 5: Referenced regarding the “Beatitudes” structure.
  • Psalm 119:165: “Great peace have they who love Thy law, and nothing will offend them” (cited near the conclusion).
