Overview:

Isaiah 6:1–9a

When we ponder the grandeur of the night sky, punctuated by billions of sparkling lights, we see God’s awesome power in creation. When we reflect on the joys and sorrows in our own lives, we see God’s absolute control. And when we perceive sin in our hearts, we see our God, full of love, constantly extending grace and calling us to serve Him.

Truly, God alone is awesome ! But when we take our eyes off Him and focus on the shifting sands around us, we tend to lose our footing.

In this important message, What Every Believer Must Never Forget! “God and God Alone . . .”  Chuck Swindoll unpacks four truths about God that believers must remember and apply each day. We must learn to fix our eyes on God alone, which will transform our entire perspective.

Message Summary:

In the message “God and God Alone,” Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the essential nature of God’s sovereignty during times of national and personal crisis. Using the historical context of the death of King Uzziah, Swindoll illustrates how the loss of earthly stability serves as an invitation to see the Lord “high and lifted up.” The sermon emphasizes that when earthly thrones become empty, the heavenly throne remains occupied, providing believers with an unshakable foundation of holiness, grace, and security.

Message Key Facts:

  • Historical Setting: The transition of power in Judah following the 52-year reign of King Uzziah (approx. 740 BC).
  • Central Vision: Isaiah’s encounter with the Lord in the temple, surrounded by seraphim.
  • Core Theme: The contrast between the temporal nature of human leadership and the eternal sovereignty of God.
  • Theological Focus: The “Trisagion” (the “Holy, Holy, Holy” cry), representing the absolute set-apartness of the Creator.
  • Prophetic Commissioning: Isaiah’s transformation from “Woe is me” (conviction) to “Here am I” (submission).

Message References:

  • Isaiah 6:1–4: The vision of God’s glory and the emptiness of the earthly throne.
  • Isaiah 6:5–7: The conviction of sin and the application of God’s purifying grace (the live coal).
  • Isaiah 6:8–9a: The call of God and the willing response of the believer.
  • 2 Chronicles 26: (Contextual) The biography and reign of King Uzziah.

Foundational Truths for Believers

Chuck Swindoll identifies four specific attributes of God that every believer must remember to maintain spiritual stability:

1. The Absolute Sovereignty of God

God is not a passive observer of history; He is its architect. Sovereignty means that nothing—not even political upheaval or personal loss—occurs outside of His decree or permission.

2. The Holiness and Majesty of God

God is “wholly other.” To see God as He truly is requires an acknowledgment of His holiness, which serves as the only reliable anchor for human wisdom and conduct.

3. The Provision of Love and Grace

A vision of God’s holiness highlights human insufficiency. However, God provides the “live coal” of grace to cleanse and restore the repentant heart for service.

4. The Source of True Security

Security is not found in favorable circumstances, but in an unchanging Person. By focusing on “God and God alone,” the believer’s perspective shifts from panic to peace.

Practical Application

  • Identify Your “Uzziah”: Reflect on what “earthly king” or source of security you have relied upon that may be failing.
  • Recalibrate through Worship: Use the imagery of Isaiah 6 to shift your focus from daily headlines to the majesty of the High Priest.
  • Respond to the Call: Accept that cleansing from sin is for the purpose of being sent into the world to represent God’s kingdom.
