What a Way to Go!

Overview:

Genesis 25:1–10

Many people expect the twilight years of their lives to be characterized by four “uns”—unproductive, unhappy, unhealthy, and unfulfilling. How unfortunate! We don’t find that kind of thinking among the great men and women in God’s “Hall of Faith.” For them, life remained meaningful right up to the end, filled with important decisions, joyful events, and purposeful involvements. As Abraham neared the sunset of his life, he clearly didn’t waste his retirement years sitting around feeling sorry for himself. Instead, he lived his last years to their fullest. From his example, we can learn a lot about ending well and finishing strong.

Message Summary:

In “What a Way to Go!”, Pastor Chuck Swindoll examines the final chapter of Abraham’s life as recorded in Genesis. Many view the later years of life with a sense of dread, assuming they will be marked by declining health or a lack of purpose. However, Abraham’s example in the “Hall of Faith” offers a different perspective: a life that remains vibrant, purposeful, and joyful until the very end.

Instead of retreating into a passive retirement, Abraham continued to make significant decisions, remained active in his relationships, and lived with a forward-looking faith. This message provides biblical encouragement for finishing well, reminding us that God has a purpose for every season of life—including the sunset years.

Message Key Facts:

  • The “Four Uns” of Aging: Pastor Chuck addresses the common cultural misconception that aging must be unproductive, unhappy, unhealthy, and unfulfilling. Abraham’s life refutes these labels.

  • Finishing Strong: The sermon focuses on the importance of “ending well,” illustrating that a legacy is built not just by how we start, but by how we conclude our journey on earth.

  • Living to the Fullest: Even as he aged, Abraham was involved in the marriage of his son, the management of his household, and new family developments, showing that faith keeps us engaged with life.

  • The Hope of the Sunset Years: For the believer, life does not simply “fade out”; it transitions into a lasting legacy of faith that impacts future generations.

Message References:

  • Genesis 25:1–10: The primary text detailing Abraham’s later life, his second marriage to Keturah, his death at a “good old age,” and his burial by his sons Isaac and Ishmael.

  • Hebrews 11:8–19: A retrospective on Abraham’s faith, emphasizing that he lived as a stranger in a foreign land because he was looking forward to the city with eternal foundations.

  • Psalm 92:14: A supporting theme that those who are planted in the house of the Lord “will still bear fruit in old age” and “stay fresh and green.”
