Overview:

Grace . . . how magnificent, how marvelous! The central importance of grace for all of life resounds through Scripture. By grace, the sick receive healing. By grace, the downtrodden are lifted up. And by grace, the lost come home. Grace impacts every person, though no person deserves it. Few individuals present a better example of grace than the man we consider in this passage of Scripture. Forgotten, obscure, and physically disabled, Mephibosheth was convinced he would live out his days in a wasteland. How wrong he was!

Message Summary:

In this moving message from The Grace Awakening, Pastor Chuck Swindoll turns to the Old Testament to provide one of the most beautiful and vivid illustrations of grace in all of Scripture. Through the story of King David and Mephibosheth, Chuck demonstrates that grace is not a reward for the worthy, but a gift for the broken.

Mephibosheth, the crippled son of Jonathan, lived in Lo-debar—a place of “no pasture” and obscurity—fearing for his life as the descendant of a former king. Instead of the judgment he expected, he received an invitation to the King’s table for the sake of another. Chuck uses this historical account to mirror our own spiritual condition: we are all spiritually “lame,” living in “Lo-debar,” until the King of Kings seeks us out and invites us into His family, not because of our merit, but because of His unconditional love.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Initiative of Grace: Grace doesn’t wait for the needy to come knocking; David (representing God) takes the initiative to seek out someone to whom he can show “the kindness of God.”
  • The Reality of Lo-debar: Mephibosheth’s location, Lo-debar, symbolizes a life without hope or spiritual nourishment. Grace finds us in our lowest state.
  • The “For the Sake of Another” Principle: David’s kindness to Mephibosheth was entirely based on his covenant with Jonathan. Similarly, God’s grace toward us is based on the work of Jesus Christ.
  • Restoration and Seat at the Table: Grace doesn’t just save us from judgment; it restores what was lost and grants us a permanent place of honor and fellowship with the King.

Message References:

Introduction: The King’s Search

  • Scripture: 2 Samuel 9:1–3
  • Fact: David asks if there is anyone left of the house of Saul to whom he can show “the kindness of God.”
  • Theme: Grace is a proactive search for the undeserving.

The Discovery in Lo-debar

  • Scripture: 2 Samuel 9:4–5
  • Fact: Ziba reveals that Jonathan’s son is living in Lo-debar, “lame in both feet.”
  • Insight: Grace isn’t intimidated by our disability or our distance from the palace.

From Fear to Favor

  • Scripture: 2 Samuel 9:6–8
  • Fact: Mephibosheth bows in fear, calling himself a “dead dog.” David’s first words to him are “Do not fear.”
  • Theme: Grace removes the barrier of shame and replaces it with the assurance of favor.

Covenant Provisions

  • Scripture: 2 Samuel 9:9–12
  • Fact: David restores all the land of Saul to Mephibosheth and appoints Ziba’s family to work it for him.
  • Insight: Grace provides for our needs beyond just our survival; it brings abundant provision.

Conclusion: Sitting at the King’s Table

  • Scripture: 2 Samuel 9:13
  • Summary: Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem and ate at the King’s table regularly, though he remained lame in both feet.
  • Final Thought: Our weaknesses (our “lame feet”) are still present, but they are hidden under the King’s table of grace.

Insight for Living Broadcast

I am an intern Bible school student now, and I've been reading the book Improving Your Serve. I considered the book as God's resource for me to learn that there are struggles and pain in serving Him, from rejection and from other people's criticism. As a young lady who wants to serve God, the book added to my courage knowing that God holds my victory. —V. C. from The Philippines
