Thinking Theologically about Sickness and Healing

Overview:

The Bible is full of accounts in which suffering people were physically healed. Likewise, Scripture contains numerous examples of biblical figures who did not receive healing.Taking a broad look at Scripture, Pastor Chuck Swindoll gracefully approaches the topics of sickness and healing along with God’s natural and miraculous interventions. Gain clarity on the biblical instructions for the suffering. Though each member of humanity is on a trajectory toward physical death, Christ-followers have the promise of eternal life with no sickness, death, or pain!

Message Summary:

In this intellectually rigorous and deeply compassionate message, Chuck Swindoll addresses one of the most persistent points of confusion in the Christian life: the relationship between faith, the Holy Spirit, and physical healing. Chuck begins by stripping away the modern “slick image” of ministry, pointing instead to the Apostle Paul’s arrival in Corinth. Far from a packaged, high-energy presentation, Paul arrived in “weakness, fear, and much trembling.” Chuck argues that this is the primary environment for the Spirit’s power—not in human hype or psychological brainwashing, but in the raw reality of human frailty. This study serves as a theological anchor for those who find themselves in the “tunnel of horror,” wondering why their prayers for healing have not been answered with an instant miracle.

The core of the message is a plea for believers to “think theologically” rather than emotionally about their pain. Chuck identifies two dangerous extremes: the “voodoo theology” that claims God must heal if we have enough faith, and a cold rationalism that excludes God from the medical process. By examining the Greek distinctions between instant healing and prolonged curing, Chuck provides a framework for understanding that God is equally present in both the miraculous and the medicinal. He asserts that the Holy Spirit’s main agenda is not just the removal of symptoms, but the transformation of the soul. Through the “Island of Malta” experience, we learn that recovery is often a slow, lonely process designed to make us “real”—shabby, scarred, and authentically valuable to a hurting world.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Broken Evangelist: Chuck highlights Paul’s state in 1 Corinthians 2, noting that the world’s greatest evangelist didn’t use “superiority of speech” or “persuasive words of wisdom.” Paul was “ragged” and “unrefined,” proving that our faith should not rest on the charisma of a leader but on the power of God. Chuck warns that any ministry relying on “hype” is closer to brainwashing than to the genuine movement of the Spirit.
  • The “Skin Horse” Illustration: Drawing from the classic children’s book The Velveteen Rabbit, Chuck shares the story of the Skin Horse—a toy that was loose in the joints and “loved to pieces.” The Skin Horse explains that “becoming real” takes a long time and usually happens after your hair has been loved off and your joints get shaky. Chuck applies this to the Christian life: God isn’t looking for “varnished, plaster saints” but for “real” people whose scars from suffering have made them beautiful to those who understand the depths of God’s grace.
  • Iaomai vs. Therapeuō: A major theological highlight is the Greek word study from Acts 28. Chuck notes that when Paul healed the father of Publius, the word used was iaomai (instant, miraculous healing). However, when the rest of the islanders came, the word was therapeuō (curing through a process of time or “therapy”). Chuck emphasizes that most of us will experience the Spirit’s power through the “prolonged recovery” of therapeuō rather than the instant surge of iaomai.
  • Four Reasons for Sickness: To help believers navigate the “Why?” of their suffering, Chuck provides four biblical categories for sickness:
    1. For the Glory of God: As seen in the man born blind (John 9), where the illness exists so that the works of God might be displayed.
    2. Natural Consequences: Sickness as a result of living in a fallen world or neglecting one’s own health.
    3. Divine Discipline: Sickness as a “spanking” from the Father to bring a wayward child back to obedience (1 Corinthians 11).
    4. To Prevent Pride: Paul’s “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12), given to keep him from becoming “exalted above measure.”
  • The Harbor Pilot Reaffirmed: Chuck revisits his illustration of the harbor pilot navigating through hidden mines. In the context of healing, the Spirit acts as the pilot who boards our “battered ship” during a slow recovery, guiding us safely to the shore of spiritual maturity when we are too weak to navigate the waters ourselves.

Message References:

  • 1 Corinthians 2:1–5: The foundational text highlighting Paul’s “weakness and fear” and the necessity of a faith that rests on God’s power rather than human wisdom.
  • Acts 28:1–10: The story of the shipwreck on Malta, providing the biblical case for the “dignity of time” in recovery and the distinction between iaomai and therapeuō.
  • 2 Corinthians 12:7–10: The account of Paul’s thorn in the flesh. Chuck uses this to show that “no” is a valid answer from God and that “grace is sufficient” even when physical healing is withheld.
  • John 9:1–3: Jesus’ response to the man born blind, establishing that sickness is not always a result of personal sin but can be a platform for God’s glory.
  • James 5:13–16: The practical instructions for the suffering and the sick, emphasizing the role of prayer and the elders, and the medicinal nature of “anointing with oil.”
  • Romans 8:28: The promise that God works all things together for good, which Chuck notes is often the “hardest truth to swallow” when one is in the middle of a prolonged recovery, yet it remains the ultimate hope of the believer.

I've been listening to the story of Jonah, particularly of his stubbornness and his disobedience. Pastor Chuck, I was acting like Jonah, and I am stubborn. When I decided to obey, God was there. I believe that God wanted me to experience the blessing of obedience. Thank you for your teachings. God bless you always. —C. G.
