The Great Divorce

Overview:

Sometimes what we profess with our words … and what we express with our actions … are two very different things. And when there’s a chasm between truth and deed … people can easily spot the contradiction. No one is better at spotting our inconsistencies than our children and family … because they know how we live and act behind closed doors! Today on INSIGHT FOR LIVING, Chuck Swindoll conducts a convicting study in the first chapter of James … where we find an eloquent appeal to align our words and actions. Chuck titled his message THE GREAT DIVORCE.

Message Summary:

In this challenging message, Chuck Swindoll defines “The Great Divorce” not as a domestic separation between husband and wife, but as the dangerous spiritual disconnect between theology and practice—the gap between what a Christian hears in the Word and what they actually do in life. Swindoll warns that many believers live as “auditors” of the faith, taking copious notes on Sunday but showing no significant change in their character or conduct during the week.

Using James 1:19–27 as a guide, Swindoll outlines a three-stage process to reconcile this separation:

  1. Preparation (The Soil): Before receiving God’s truth, the heart must be readied through an open ear, a controlled tongue, a calm spirit, and a clean heart. Swindoll emphasizes that just as surgery requires a germ-free environment, spiritual growth requires the removal of “filthiness” (sin) and agitation.
  2. Implantation (The Seed): Believers must receive the Word with humility, welcoming it like a guest into a home. Swindoll urges listeners not to be “finicky eaters” who reject spiritual food because of the way it is served, but to accept God’s truth with a teachable spirit.
  3. Response (The Fruit): The ultimate goal is to be a “doer” rather than merely a “hearer.” Swindoll explains that true religion is validated by three practical evidences: a bridled tongue, compassion for the distressed (such as orphans and widows), and personal moral purity.

Message Key Facts:

  • The “Auditor” Analogy: Swindoll compares a “hearer only” to a college student auditing a class—someone who attends lectures and fills notebooks with information but has no assignments, takes no tests, and is held to no responsibility.
  • The Spiritual Mirror: James compares the Bible to a mirror. While a physical mirror shows one’s face, Scripture acts as a spiritual mirror revealing what kind of person we are. The faithful Christian looks into it and makes necessary changes rather than walking away and forgetting the reflection.
  • The “Old World Airline” Illustration: To illustrate the absurdity of approaching God’s Word without preparation, Swindoll describes a fictional airline that offers half-price tickets because they skip maintenance and safety checks. Just as no one would board such a plane, Christians should not expect to soar spiritually without preparing their hearts.
  • Socrates on Silence: Swindoll cites a story where Socrates tells a young man that learning oratory will cost double tuition: first to learn the science of holding one’s tongue, and second to learn the wise use of it. This illustrates the biblical command to be “slow to speak”.
  • “Filthiness” as Ear Wax: Swindoll notes that the Greek word for “filthiness” in James 1:21 was a medical term used to describe wax in the ear. Sin acts like wax that plugs the spiritual ear, preventing the believer from truly hearing God.
  • A.W. Tozer’s Warning: The sermon quotes A.W. Tozer, who argued that the disparity between theory and practice is more destructive to Christianity than communism or liberalism, noting that truth grieves when her followers only visit her on Sundays.

Message References:

  • James 1:19–27: The primary text outlining the requirements to be quick to hear, slow to speak, and a doer of the Word.
  • 2 Timothy 3:13–17: Paul’s instruction to Timothy regarding the profitability of inspired Scripture for teaching, reproof, and training in righteousness.
  • Hebrews 4:12: A reminder that God’s Word is alive, active, and serves as a critic or discerner of the heart’s intentions.
