Overview:

1 Timothy 3:8–13

You can’t put a price on a good name. An honored and respected reputation is worth more than “silver and gold” (Proverbs 22:1). In fact, we could write in bold letters this very proverb across the last couple of lessons of this sermon series—the ones dealing with the necessary qualities for the office of overseer (1 Timothy 3:1–7). We could do the same in this lesson, too, because a sterling reputation for those who serve as deacons in God’s church is just as essential (3:8–13).

Message Summary:

In this ninth message of the series Excellence in Ministry: Starting Strong, Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the vital role of deacons in the local church. While pastors and overseers provide spiritual direction, deacons provide spiritual service. This study of 1 Timothy 3:8–13 elevates the office of deacon from a mere administrative role to a position of high dignity, emphasizing that a sterling reputation is a non-negotiable requirement for those who serve God’s people.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Office of Deacon: Derived from the Greek word diakonos, meaning “servant” or “one who ministers.”

  • A Parallel Standard: The moral and spiritual qualifications for deacons are nearly identical to those of overseers, proving that God values character in service just as much as in leadership.

  • The Testing Phase: Scripture mandates that potential deacons “must first be tested” (1 Timothy 3:10) to ensure their lives are above reproach before they officially enter the office.

  • The Promise of Service: Those who serve well as deacons gain a “high standing” and “great confidence in the faith,” suggesting that faithful service leads to increased spiritual authority and influence.

Message References:

Primary Scripture Reference: 1 Timothy 3:8–13

  • 1 Timothy 3:8: The foundational qualities of a deacon: dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, and not fond of sordid gain.

  • 1 Timothy 3:9: The doctrinal requirement: “holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.”

  • 1 Timothy 3:11: The qualifications for women (or wives of deacons): dignified, not malicious gossips, temperate, and faithful in all things.

  • 1 Timothy 3:12–13: The domestic requirement: deacons must be husbands of only one wife and good managers of their children and households.

The Marks of a Worthy Servant

Pastor Chuck Swindoll highlights the essential character traits that define a biblical servant:

  1. Dignity and Integrity: A worthy servant is someone who commands respect through their conduct. They are “not double-tongued,” meaning they are consistent and honest in their speech.

  2. Doctrinal Depth: A deacon must do more than just complete tasks; they must possess a deep, personal understanding of the Gospel and live it out with a “clear conscience.”

  3. Domestic Stability: A servant’s home life is the primary testing ground for their ministry. The ability to manage a family with love and discipline is the precursor to serving the family of God.

  4. A Proven Reputation: Servanthood is not an entry-level position for the untested. It is a role reserved for those whose lives have been observed and found blameless over time.

Insight for Living Broadcast

Whenever I'm going through something, your sermons/talks give me such strength to make it through the day. I listen most every day at work (with my headphones on) but I notice that it helps me stay focused and calm hearing you speaking the words that God wants me to hear for that moment in time. So again, thank you! —A.R. from Massachusetts
