The Church: Let’s Start Here

Overview:

Immediately after Peter confessed Jesus to be the promised Messiah, Jesus said He will build His church on that confession . . . a fitting declaration! The existence and purpose of the church rests on the lordship of Jesus. Dig into this truth with Pastor Chuck Swindoll as he examines the roots of the church in Matthew 16:13–18 and the essentials of the church in Acts 2:41–47. Learn what the church should believe and do as it follows the leadership of Christ, her Lord!

Message Summary:

In this foundational message, Chuck Swindoll strips away the traditions and cultural “chatter” surrounding the church to rediscover its original purpose and identity. He begins by reminding believers that God’s Word acts as a kritikos (critic), telling us what we need to hear rather than just what we want to hear. Chuck defines the church not as a building or a religious organization, but as the ecclesia—the “called-out ones.” He emphasizes that the church is a living organism, the Body of Christ, designed to function with authenticity and power in a world that has lost its way.

The sermon focuses on two pivotal New Testament passages: Matthew 16 and Acts 2. In Matthew, Chuck explores Peter’s great confession and Jesus’ subsequent declaration that the church would be built upon “this rock”—not Peter himself, but the bedrock truth of Christ’s identity. Transitioning to Acts 2, Chuck outlines the four essential pillars of a healthy local church: the apostles’ doctrine, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayer. By returning to these basics, the church ceases to be a mere social club and becomes a “lighthouse” that offers genuine hope and spiritual stability.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Divine Critic: Chuck explains the Greek word kritikos from Hebrews 4:12, noting that the Bible provides “constructive criticism” to keep our lives and ministries aligned with God’s truth.
  • The “Rock” of Confession: The message clarifies the wordplay in Matthew 16 between Petros (a small stone) and petra (a massive rock). Chuck argues that Christ builds His church on the bedrock of the confession that He is the Son of the Living God.
  • A Voice vs. An Echo: Chuck shares his personal commitment to ensure his teaching is a “voice from the Living God” rather than a mere “echo” of what others are doing or saying in the religious world.
  • The Four Pillars of Acts 2:42: 1. Apostles’ Doctrine: The commitment to systematic, biblical teaching. 2. Fellowship: Genuine, authentic sharing of life (koinonia). 3. Breaking of Bread: Commemorating the Lord’s Table. 4. Prayers: Maintaining a constant dependence on God.
  • The Universal vs. Local Church: Chuck distinguishes between the “Universal Church” (all believers of all time) and the “Local Church” (the specific, visible gathering where ministry happens), urging believers to be active in the latter.

Message References:

  • Matthew 16:13–18: The location of Peter’s confession and Jesus’ first mention of the “church” and the “gates of hell.”
  • Acts 2:41–47: The description of the early church’s lifestyle, growth, and devotion to the four pillars of ministry.
  • Hebrews 4:12: The description of God’s Word as a living, active, and discerning (critic) tool.
  • Ephesians 1:22–23: A reference to Christ being the Head over all things to the church, which is His body.
  • Ephesians 4:11–12: The purpose of spiritual leaders to equip the saints for the work of ministry.

Insight for Living Broadcast

I am an intern Bible school student now, and I've been reading the book Improving Your Serve. I considered the book as God's resource for me to learn that there are struggles and pain in serving Him, from rejection and from other people's criticism. As a young lady who wants to serve God, the book added to my courage knowing that God holds my victory. —V. C. from The Philippines
