Overview:

It is impossible to deny the existence of sin and evil in our world today. Until we accept the bad news, we can’t fully appreciate the good news.

Come to terms with the reality of depravity through Pastor Chuck Swindoll’s message on Romans 1:18–25. Discover the biblical meaning of God’s wrath and better understand His character.

As you encounter the bad news, let your heart swell with the hope Christ guarantees to all who believe in Him!

Message Summary:

Before the beauty of the Gospel can be fully appreciated, the gravity of our condition must be understood. In “The Bad News about the Whole World,” Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the sobering reality of human depravity as laid out in Romans 1:18–25. This message addresses the difficult subject of God’s wrath—not as a temperamental outburst, but as a holy and righteous opposition to sin.

Swindoll explains that humanity is without excuse because God has clearly revealed His power and divine nature through creation. Instead of worshipping the Creator, humanity has a tendency to “suppress the truth,” leading to spiritual blindness and moral decay. This message serves as the essential backdrop for the Gospel, showing that until we confront the “bad news” of our rebellion and its consequences, the “good news” of God’s rescue plan will never seem as glorious as it truly is.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Reality of God’s Wrath: The message defines God’s wrath as His settled, judicial opposition to all ungodliness and unrighteousness.

  • General Revelation: Paul argues that God has made His existence evident through the things He has made, leaving humanity “without excuse” for ignoring Him.

  • The Exchange: A central theme of the text is the tragic “exchange” where humans trade the glory of the incorruptible God for images of created things.

  • Suppression of Truth: Sin is described as an active suppression of the truth that God has already made plain to the human heart and mind.

Message References:

Primary Scripture References

  • Romans 1:18–20: The revelation of God’s wrath and the evidence of His invisible attributes through the created order.

  • Romans 1:21–23: The downward spiral of human reasoning: though they knew God, they did not honor Him, resulting in darkened hearts and idolatry.

  • Romans 1:24–25: The first of three mentions of God “giving them over” to the consequences of their own desires, as they traded the truth of God for a lie.

Core Principles for Life

  1. Acknowledge the Diagnosis: Just as a patient must accept a diagnosis to receive a cure, we must acknowledge our sinfulness to receive God’s grace.

  2. Look Up and Listen: Nature is God’s “silent missionary.” When we look at the universe, we are seeing a constant testimony to the power and character of God.

  3. Beware of Truth Suppression: Be honest with the “light” God has given you. Ignoring or suppressing conviction leads to a hardened heart and a clouded mind.

  4. Worship the Creator, Not the Creature: Idolatry isn’t just about statues; it’s putting anything (career, family, self) in the place that only God should occupy. True life is found in worshipping the Truth, not the lie.
