Overview:

Esther 2:8–20

Esther, a beautiful, young Jewish woman, eventually became the queen of Persia—a decision that would later preserve the destiny of the Jewish race. Woven through the book that bears her name are many of the qualities that caused Esther to stand out and find “favor in the eyes of all who saw her” (Esther 2:15). Such a rare blend of beauty, strength, and dignity! These qualities still hold our interest today, for now, as then, they cause a watching world to stand up and take notice. All women can be encouraged to follow Esther’s example . . . for these qualities are not unique to that one lovely woman.

Message Summary:

In "Strength and Dignity on Parade," Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the compelling story of Esther, a young Jewish woman whose internal character far outshone her external beauty. While Esther’s rise to the position of Queen of Persia is often viewed as a "fairytale," Swindoll focuses on the rare blend of strength and dignity that allowed her to find favor in a pagan court and eventually save her people. This message encourages women to cultivate a quiet confidence and moral courage that commands respect and fulfills God’s specific purposes for their lives.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Power of Favor: Esther found favor with everyone who saw her (Esther 2:15), not merely because of her appearance, but because of a "rare blend" of internal qualities.
  • The Importance of Submission: Even as a potential queen, Esther remained under the guidance of Mordecai, demonstrating that true strength is often found in a teachable spirit.
  • Providential Positioning: Esther’s life proves that God places His people in specific locations and roles "for such a time as this," even in secular or hostile environments.
  • Dignity Under Pressure: Esther maintained her composure and dignity during a year of preparation and the high-stakes environment of the Persian palace.
  • The Goal of Character: The ultimate purpose of developing strength and dignity is not personal advancement, but being prepared for the moment God calls us to act on behalf of others.

Message References:

1. The Preparation of a Queen (Esther 2:8–12)

Esther was taken into the king’s harem, a situation beyond her control.
  • Adapting Without Compromising: She navigated the requirements of the palace without losing her identity or her connection to her heritage.
  • The Beauty of Discipline: The year of "beautifying" treatments serves as a metaphor for the long, often hidden seasons of preparation God uses to refine our character.

2. The Distinction of Simple Dignity (Esther 2:13–15)

When it was her turn to go before the king, Esther chose not to take extra adornments.
  • Contentment: She relied on what was provided, showing a lack of greed and a confidence in her own personhood.
  • Winning Favor: Her internal dignity was so evident that she won the admiration of Hegai, the king’s eunuch, and eventually King Ahasuerus himself.

3. The Secret of Her Strength (Esther 2:16–20)

Even after being crowned queen, Esther remained faithful to her roots and her mentor.
  • Ongoing Obedience: She continued to follow Mordecai’s instruction not to reveal her family background, showing that her new status did not make her "too big" for counsel.
  • Moral Courage: Her strength was built on a foundation of humility and the quiet realization that she was part of a much larger story.

Primary Scripture References

  • Esther 2:8–20: The primary account of Esther’s journey to the throne.
  • Proverbs 31:25: "Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she smiles at the future."
  • 1 Peter 3:3–4: The New Testament emphasis on the "imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit."
  • Esther 4:14: The famous call to recognize one’s providential placement "for such a time as this."

Practical Application

To model the strength and dignity seen in Esther’s life, women are encouraged to:
  1. Trust Your Placement: Recognize that your current situation—whether difficult or prominent—is a place where God can use you.
  2. Focus on the "Hidden Person": Prioritize the development of your character and spiritual depth over external validation or appearance.
  3. Remain Teachable: Look for godly mentors (like Mordecai) and maintain a heart that is willing to listen to wise counsel, regardless of your status.
  4. Prepare for the Moment: Treat your current season of life as a "time of preparation" so that when God opens a door of opportunity or crisis, you are ready to act with courage.

Insight for Living Broadcast

Whenever I'm going through something, your sermons/talks give me such strength to make it through the day. I listen most every day at work (with my headphones on) but I notice that it helps me stay focused and calm hearing you speaking the words that God wants me to hear for that moment in time. So again, thank you! —A.R. from Massachusetts
