Overview:

Christ has set free His followers. No longer living under the law, no longer enslaved by the dominating authority of sin, and no longer plagued by a life of guilt and shame, believers are “truly free” (John 8:36). Jesus spoke openly of His desire to give us “a rich and satisfying life” (10:10). What provisions! What grace! Free in Christ, we are liberated from the shackles, released from the bondage of sin.

Tragically, numerous believers do not fully live grace-based lives. Far too many Christians are uptight, inflexible, inhibited, overly cautious, and filled with fear. The reason isn’t difficult to understand. The relentless, joyless, intimidating, grace-killing message of legalism has eclipsed the Son’s message of freedom, leaving us victimized and paralyzed, obsessively concerned about what others may think or say or do.

Let’s expose legalism for what it is and explore the toll it takes on those who were meant to be free but are, in fact, living like slaves.

Message Summary:

In this crucial message from The Grace Awakening series, Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the historical and spiritual necessity of defending the gospel of grace. Drawing from the life of the Apostle Paul, Chuck illustrates that grace is not a passive doctrine; it is a treasure that must be guarded against those who seek to infiltrate the church and bring believers back into bondage.

“Standing Your Ground for Grace” examines the confrontation between Paul and the legalists of his day, as well as his public rebuke of Peter. Chuck demonstrates that when the purity of the gospel is at stake, silence is not an option. This message provides a roadmap for modern believers to recognize “grace-killers” and to maintain their stand in the freedom that Christ has provided, even when facing pressure from influential leaders or long-standing traditions.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Infiltration of Legalism: Chuck points out that legalism often enters the church “secretly” through people who want to spy on the liberty we have in Christ.
  • The Necessity of Conflict: While grace-filled people prefer peace, there are times when “not yielding for a single moment” is the only way to preserve the truth of the gospel.
  • Public Accountability: The confrontation between Paul and Peter serves as a reminder that no leader is above the truth of grace, and hypocrisy must be addressed when it leads others astray.
  • Dead to the Law, Alive to God: The climax of the message focuses on the reality that we have been crucified with Christ. If righteousness could come through the Law, then Christ died for nothing.

Message References:

[00:00] – Introduction: The Battle for the Gospel

  • Scripture: Galatians 2:1–5
  • Fact: Paul traveled to Jerusalem to ensure that the “truth of the gospel” remained with the Gentiles, refusing to allow Titus to be compelled into circumcision.
  • Theme: Protecting the message from “false brothers” who spy on our liberty.

[11:45] – Recognizing Peer Pressure in the Church

  • Scripture: Galatians 2:6–10
  • Fact: Even the “pillars” of the church—James, Peter, and John—had to recognize that God’s grace was extended to the uncircumcised just as it was to the circumcised.
  • Insight: God shows no partiality; the message of grace is universal regardless of background or status.

[22:30] – Confronting Hypocrisy Head-On

  • Scripture: Galatians 2:11–14
  • Fact: Paul confronted Peter to his face because Peter had withdrawn from eating with Gentiles due to fear of the “circumcision group.”
  • Theme: The danger of “grace-killing” behavior in leadership and the need for courage to stand for the truth.

[31:15] – Justification by Faith Alone

  • Scripture: Galatians 2:15–18
  • Fact: Chuck emphasizes that a person is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Insight: To return to the Law after being saved by grace is to rebuild the very “transgressions” that were torn down.

[40:10] – Conclusion: Crucified with Christ

  • Scripture: Galatians 2:19–21
  • Summary: Our old self—the one trying to satisfy the Law—has died. Christ now lives in us.
  • Call to Action: Don’t “nullify the grace of God.” If you are trying to earn your way to God, you are acting as if Christ’s sacrifice was unnecessary.
