Overview:

Genesis 16:1–8, 11–12, 15–16

Impatience allows the enthusiasm of the flesh to eclipse the work of the Spirit. God often says, “Wait,” but our flesh always says, “Now!” This tension creates the perfect condition for believers to run ahead of God. God has a plan, but we struggle with His timing. Instead of waiting on Him, we take matters into our own hands. Genesis 16 records a classic example of running ahead of God. Abram and Sarai devised a scheme to “help” God fulfill His promises. This episode in Abram’s life should remind us to wait on the Lord, not only believing His promises but also trusting His timing.

Message Summary:

In this message, Pastor Chuck Swindoll addresses the universal struggle with impatience and the human tendency to “help” God fulfill His promises. Using the account of Abram and Sarai in Genesis 16, Chuck illustrates what happens when the enthusiasm of the flesh eclipses the work of the Spirit. While God often instructs His children to “wait,” our human nature constantly demands “now,” leading us to take matters into our own hands.

The decision to involve Hagar in the fulfillment of God’s covenant was a scheme born of anxiety and a lack of trust in divine timing. This message serves as a sobering reminder that we must not only believe in the promises of God but also trust the schedule He has set. Through this exploration of Abram’s failure, we learn the value of waiting on the Lord and the long-term consequences of running ahead of His plan.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Tension of Timing: Believers often struggle not with what God has promised, but with when He will fulfill it. Impatience is identified as a primary trigger for carnal decision-making.

  • Human Schemes vs. Divine Plans: Sarai and Abram’s plan to use Hagar was a culturally acceptable solution of their day, but it was a spiritual shortcut that ignored God’s specific word.

  • The Fleshly “Help”: The sermon explores how trying to “help” God usually results in complicated social, emotional, and spiritual fallout that affects generations.

  • Wait on the Lord: A central theme is the cultivation of a “waiting faith”—one that remains still until God moves, even when the wait seems impossibly long.

Message References:

  • Genesis 16:1–8, 11–12, 15–16: The primary narrative of Hagar, the birth of Ishmael, and the conflict that arose within Abram’s household.

  • Psalm 27:14: A supporting command to “Wait for the Lord; be strong and let your heart take courage.”

  • Proverbs 3:5–6: Used to emphasize the importance of leaning on God’s understanding rather than our own strategies.

  • Galatians 4:22–26: A New Testament theological reflection on the difference between the “child of the flesh” and the “child of the promise.”

Insight for Living Broadcast

I've been listening to the story of Jonah, particularly of his stubbornness and his disobedience. Pastor Chuck, I was acting like Jonah, and I am stubborn. When I decided to obey, God was there. I believe that God wanted me to experience the blessing of obedience. Thank you for your teachings. God bless you always. —C. G.
