Responding Wisely When Falsely Accused

Overview:

Selections from Job 20–21

Zophar’s acrid tongue had not softened as he waited his turn to speak again. He delivered three messages to Job—each one in an exaggerated manner. Zophar delivered his lecture not unlike a novice coloring by the numbers—his numbers. But the major problem with his messages was that they were wrong when you interpret them as Zophar intended. Job decided this was no time for passivity, so, addressing all three of Zophar’s points, he gave numerous examples of why Zophar’s argument didn’t hold water. As we see how Job handled his accuser, we find four responses to false accusations that are worth mentioning.

Message Summary:

In “Responding Wisely When Falsely Accused,” Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the harsh and exaggerated lectures Job received from Zophar. Focusing on Job 20–21, the message highlights how Zophar’s “acrid tongue” remained unchanged as he delivered a series of misguided points based on a “paint-by-numbers” theology. Zophar’s major error was assuming that the wicked always suffer immediately and the righteous always prosper—an interpretation that did not hold up against the reality of Job’s life.

Recognizing that this was not a time for passivity, Job responded with logic and numerous examples to dismantle Zophar’s faulty arguments. By analyzing this exchange, Swindoll identifies four wise responses to false accusations. This message provides a practical guide for believers who find themselves under the weight of misrepresentation, showing how to maintain integrity and use truth to combat “expert” but erroneous opinions.

Message Key Facts:

  • Exaggerated Arguments: Zophar’s second round of speeches was characterized by exaggeration and a rigid, simplistic view of divine justice that ignored the complexities of real life.

  • The “Novice” Interpretation: Swindoll compares Zophar’s approach to a novice coloring by the numbers—following a pre-set formula that failed to account for God’s sovereign mystery.

  • Job’s Active Defense: Unlike earlier exchanges, Job takes an active role in rebutting Zophar, using real-world observations about the prosperity of the wicked to prove Zophar wrong.

  • Integrity Over Passivity: The message demonstrates that while grace is necessary, there are times when a firm, fact-based response is the wisest way to handle false charges.

Message References:

  • Scripture: Selections from Job 20–21

    • Job 20:4–5: Zophar’s faulty premise: “The triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the godless momentary.”

    • Job 21:7–9: Job’s counter-argument: “Why do the wicked still live, continue on, also become very powerful? Their houses are safe from fear, and the rod of God is not on them.”

    • Job 21:23–26: Job’s observation on the impartiality of death: One dies in full prosperity and another in bitterness of soul, yet both lie down in the dust alike.

    • Job 21:34: Job’s final assessment of his friends’ counsel: “How then will you vainly comfort me, for your answers remain full of falsehood?”

    Core Principles for Life

    1. Reject Simplistic Formulas: Don’t let others force your life into a “cause-and-effect” box. Life is more complex than “bad things only happen to bad people.”

    2. Speak Truth to Falsehood: When you are falsely accused, you are not required to be a “doormat.” Like Job, use logic and clear examples to respectfully dismantle lies.

    3. Observe Reality, Not Just Tradition: Wisdom involves looking at the world as it actually is. Don’t cling to religious platitudes that contradict the observable truth of God’s providence.

    4. Maintain Your Integrity: The goal of responding to an accuser is not to win a fight, but to preserve the truth of your testimony and the character of your God.
