Prevailing through Prayer

Overview:

Acts 12:1–17

God specializes in the impossible. There is nothing He cannot do! Yet, we’re often slow to trust Him, even though we know He unleashes His power through our prayers, working miracles and performing serendipities that we never dreamed of. The Lord proves Himself faithful when we seek Him—even in the toughest circumstances and the most impossible situations. God’s miraculous power might seem distant or theoretical at times, but it’s not. It is real! The Acts of the Apostles proves it, teeming with true stories of supernatural encounters and glorious surprises. In this message, we discover how God used intercessory prayer to perform an incredible miracle in the life of Peter, the fisherman-turned-apostle.

Message Summary:

In the message “Prevailing Through Prayer,” Pastor Chuck Swindoll examines one of the most dramatic accounts of divine intervention in the New Testament: the rescue of the apostle Peter from Herod’s prison. Swindoll emphasizes that while the early church faced an impossible political and physical crisis, they did not respond with panic or political maneuvering, but with fervent, corporate prayer. The sermon illustrates the staggering contrast between earthly power and heavenly authority, reminding believers that prayer remains the most potent weapon in the church’s arsenal when facing the “closed doors” of life.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Historical Crisis: King Herod Agrippa I had already executed the apostle James and intended to do the same to Peter to please the religious establishment.
  • The Irony of Prayer: The church was praying “fervently” (ektenos) for Peter’s release, yet when he actually appeared at the door, they were so shocked they initially refused to believe it was him.
  • The Maximum-Security Miracle: Peter was guarded by four squads of four soldiers each, chained to two guards, and behind multiple iron gates—none of which could hinder the angel of the Lord.
  • The Power of the Word: The chapter begins with Herod’s attempt to destroy the church and ends with Herod’s death and the declaration: “But the word of the Lord continued to grow and to be multiplied” (Acts 12:24).
  • Rhoda’s Role: A servant girl named Rhoda is the first to recognize God’s answered prayer, highlighting that God often uses the “lowly” to announce His great works.

Message References:

  • Acts 12:1–5: The setting of the persecution and the church’s primary response: “Prayer for him was being made fervently by the church to God.”
  • Acts 12:6–11: The supernatural deliverance of Peter by an angel while he was sleeping in peace.
  • Acts 12:12–17: The gathering at the house of Mary and the humorous yet convicting reaction of the praying believers to the answer of their own prayers.
  • Psalm 34:7: (Contextual) “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and rescues them.”
  • James 5:16: (Contextual) The reminder that the “effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.”

Foundational Truths for Believers

Chuck Swindoll identifies four vital principles regarding the power of prevailing prayer:

1. Prayer is the Church’s Greatest Resource

When we reach the end of our human resources, we find the beginning of God’s. The early church had no political standing or military power; they had only the “throne of grace,” which proved to be more powerful than Herod’s throne.

2. Peace is the Result of Trust

Peter was sleeping soundly on the night before his intended execution. True faith allows a believer to rest in God’s sovereignty even when the “gates” are still locked and the soldiers are still present.

3. God’s Answers Often Exceed Our Expectations

The believers were praying for Peter, yet they were “amazed” when he showed up. God is gracious enough to answer our prayers even when our faith is mingled with doubt or surprise.

4. No Tyrant is Higher than the King

Herod appeared to be in total control at the start of the chapter, but by the end, he is judged by God. Prevailing prayer recognizes that the ultimate authority in the universe does not reside in any human capital, but in heaven.

Practical Application

  • Pray Fervently, Not Just Formally: Evaluate your prayer life. Is it a list of “safe” requests, or are you “agonizing” (contending) for the big, seemingly impossible things God wants to do?
  • Identify Your “Iron Gate”: What situation in your life feels like a maximum-security prison? Bring that specific “gate” before the Lord in prayer today, trusting His ability to open what man has shut.
  • Watch for the Answer: Don’t be like the believers in Mary’s house who prayed for a miracle but didn’t believe it when it arrived. Expect God to move, and be ready to open the door when He does.
  • Rest in the Middle of the Storm: If you are facing a crisis tomorrow, ask God for the “Peter-like” peace that allows you to sleep soundly tonight, knowing your life is in His hands.

Insight for Living Broadcast

Whenever I'm going through something, your sermons/talks give me such strength to make it through the day. I listen most every day at work (with my headphones on) but I notice that it helps me stay focused and calm hearing you speaking the words that God wants me to hear for that moment in time. So again, thank you! —A.R. from Massachusetts
