Overview:

Genesis 19:30–38

The deep depravity of our culture constantly threatens to sweep us away into gross indecency and shameless immorality. All around us, lives are being shattered, families ripped apart, and whole communities destroyed. We tend to think this is a modern malady, that depravity has recently begun its relentless deluge.

Wrong. The account of Lot’s dysfunctional family affair teaches us that the tragic effects of sin have been with us since the beginning. This embarrassing scene in Genesis 19 reminds us of just how deeply an immoral culture can affect our sense of right and wrong, prompting us to remember our weaknesses and God’s unwavering standard.

Message Summary:

In this message, Pastor Chuck Swindoll addresses the sobering reality of how a corrupt culture can gradually erode the moral foundation of a family. Using the tragic and dysfunctional account of Lot’s family after the destruction of Sodom, Chuck illustrates that depravity is not a modern malady but a relentless undertow that has threatened humanity since the beginning.

The disturbing events in Genesis 19 serve as a stark warning: when we linger in an immoral environment, we risk losing our sense of right and wrong. This sermon encourages believers to remain vigilant, acknowledging human weakness while clinging to God’s unwavering standards to avoid being swept away by the cultural currents of indecency and immorality.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Influence of Environment: Lot’s daughters, having been raised in Sodom, adopted the depraved logic of their surroundings, proving that our environment significantly shapes our ethical boundaries.

  • The Relentlessness of Sin: Depravity is compared to a “dangerous undertow”—subtle but powerful enough to pull families into chaos and shame.

  • The Long-Term Legacy of Disobedience: The descendants of the incestuous unions in this passage (the Moabites and Ammonites) became perpetual enemies of Israel, showing that “private” sins often have public, generational consequences.

  • A Call to Moral Vigilance: Believers are reminded that God’s standards do not shift with the culture; we must proactively protect our families from the prevailing moral deluge.

Message References:

  • Genesis 19:30–38: The primary narrative detailing Lot’s retreat to a cave and the shameful actions of his daughters to preserve their family line.

  • 1 Corinthians 15:33: A supporting New Testament warning that “bad company corrupts good morals.”

  • Psalm 11:3: Used to emphasize the importance of maintaining righteous foundations when the social order crumbles.
