Operation Assimilation

Overview:

Joshua 1:1–18

A vast difference exists between watching something happen and being involved in what happens. For many, church becomes a “spectator sport”—a few exhausted, burned-out believers knock themselves out to run the ministries and activities, while the majority sit back and observe from a distance. This is a far cry from the way the body of Christ was designed to function! In this message, we’ll focus on the problems of “spectatorism” and how we as members of the church body can overcome congregational apathy. The ancient Hebrews were forced to work together and get involved in taking the land of Canaan. In their example, we find some practical direction for our own lives.

Message Summary:

In “Operation Assimilation,” Pastor Chuck Swindoll confronts the pervasive issue of “spectatorism” within the local church. He argues that many congregations have become like spectator sports, where a small group of exhausted leaders performs while the majority observes from a distance. Drawing from Joshua 1, Chuck illustrates how the ancient Hebrews were required to move together as one body to inherit the land of Canaan. This message provides a biblical blueprint for overcoming congregational apathy and finding one’s unique place of involvement and service within the body of Christ.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Problem of Spectatorism: Chuck identifies the “spectator sport” mentality as a major hindrance to church health. It leads to burnout for the few and stagnation for the many.
  • Designed for Involvement: The body of Christ was never intended to be a passive audience. Like a physical body, every “member” has a necessary function that contributes to the health of the whole.
  • The Example of Joshua 1: As Israel prepared to cross the Jordan, the command was not for a few but for the entire nation to prepare and move. Assimilation means every person taking ownership of the mission.
  • Overcoming Apathy: Congregational apathy is often broken when individuals stop asking “What can this church do for me?” and start asking “What part has God called me to play in this body?”
  • The Strength of Unity: Victory in Canaan required the total participation of all tribes. Similarly, the church’s impact on the world is directly tied to the level of assimilation and unity among its members.

Message References:

  • Joshua 1:2–3: God’s specific command to Joshua and the people to “arise” and cross the Jordan to take the land He was giving them.
  • Joshua 1:7–8: The requirement for success: being strong, courageous, and meditating on the Word of God day and night.
  • Joshua 1:11: The practical instruction to the people to prepare provisions and get ready to move together.
  • Joshua 1:16–18: The people’s response of total commitment and obedience to Joshua’s leadership as they moved toward the goal.

Insight for Living Broadcast

I've been listening to the story of Jonah, particularly of his stubbornness and his disobedience. Pastor Chuck, I was acting like Jonah, and I am stubborn. When I decided to obey, God was there. I believe that God wanted me to experience the blessing of obedience. Thank you for your teachings. God bless you always. —C. G.
