Overview:

2 Timothy 3:1–5, 10–12, 14; 4:1–5

“Never give up, never give in.” This could have been the motto of the apostle Paul’s life. Marked by grace and grit, Paul didn’t know the meaning of quitting. Despite constant hardship, physical abuse, emotional anguish, verbal assaults, false accusations, unrelenting pressure, frequent misunderstandings, multiple imprisonments, and heartbreaking abandonment, Paul pressed on toward the prize of knowing Christ. Quit simply wasn’t in the man’s vocabulary. We ought to erase it from ours as well. And we can if we’ll hear and heed Paul’s last words to his friend, Timothy.

Message Summary:

In this stirring and final message of the “Integrity” series, Chuck Swindoll explores the “Integrity of Finishing Well” through the last words of the Apostle Paul. Written from a cold, lonely dungeon in Rome, 2 Timothy serves as Paul’s last will and testament before his execution. Chuck emphasizes that the true test of integrity is not just how one starts the race, but the tenacity to never quit when the “savage times” of the last days arrive. The sermon highlights that finishing well requires a steadfast commitment to the truth, a refusal to be swayed by public opinion, and a heart that is completely poured out for the sake of Christ.

The narrative centers on Paul’s solemn charge to Timothy to “preach the Word” in season and out of season. Chuck contrasts the shallow, consumer-driven religion of the last days—where people seek teachers who will “tickle their ears”—with the rigorous, self-sacrificial life of a true follower of Jesus. Using the metaphor of a “drink offering,” Chuck describes Paul’s life as one being poured out until nothing is left. The message concludes with a triumphant look at the “Crown of Righteousness” awaiting those who, like Paul, can say at the end of their lives, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.”

Message Key Facts:

  • The Dungeon Context: Chuck reminds the listeners that these aren’t words from a ivory tower, but from a damp, dark Roman dungeon where Paul awaited the “axe to fall” on his neck.
  • Savage Times: Chuck explains the Greek word chalepos in 2 Timothy 3:1, translating it as “savage” or “dangerous” times—a period marked by self-love, greed, and a rejection of the sacred.
  • The Solemn Charge: The command to “Preach the Word” is described as a high-stakes mandate that must be carried out regardless of whether the culture finds it convenient or popular.
  • The Drink Offering Metaphor: Paul describes his death not as a tragedy, but as a “libation” or drink offering poured out on an altar, signifying a life totally spent for God’s glory.
  • The Final Greeting: Chuck highlights the poignancy of Paul’s final remarks in 2 Timothy 4, noting his loneliness (“everyone abandoned me”) and his ultimate comfort (“the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength”).

Message References:

  • 2 Timothy 3:1–5: The description of the “savage times” in the last days and the warning to stay away from those who act religious but reject God’s power.
  • 2 Timothy 4:1–5: The solemn charge to preach the Word, remain clear-headed, and carry out the ministry fully.
  • 2 Timothy 4:6–8: Paul’s famous epitaph: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful.”
  • 2 Timothy 4:16–18: The testimony of the Lord’s presence and protection during Paul’s first defense in court.
  • 1 Corinthians 15:58 (Reference): Cited as an encouragement to remain steadfast and immovable in the work of the Lord.
