Overview:

Exodus 1

Despite brutal captives and cruel working conditions, the Israelites grew to be a large nation within Egypt.

Join Pastor Chuck Swindoll for a fascinating recap of Israel’s start in Egypt in Exodus 1, the people’s God-sized dilemma, and their need for a deliverer. The harsh climate nurtured a baby boy who would grow to become one of history’s greatest figures.

Be encouraged by powerful truths: hard times don’t erase God’s promises, harsh treatment doesn’t escape God’s notice, and heavy tests don’t eclipse God’s concern!

Message Summary:

In this opening message of the series Moses: A Man of Selfless Dedication, Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the dramatic and difficult transition of the Israelites from honored guests in Egypt to oppressed slaves. As a “new king who did not know Joseph” rose to power, the stage was set for a divine rescue. This study dives into Exodus 1 to reveal how God’s promises remain unshakable even under the weight of severe affliction.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Setting: Egypt, approximately 400 years after Joseph’s family settled in the land of Goshen.

  • The Conflict: Pharaoh’s fear of the Israelites’ growing numbers led to a three-stage plan of oppression: forced labor, infanticide via the midwives, and finally, a decree of mass murder.

  • The Characters: * Pharaoh: The paranoid ruler of Egypt.

    • Shiphrah and Puah: The Hebrew midwives who feared God more than Pharaoh.

    • Moses: Introduced as the “baby boy” born into this harsh climate to become Israel’s deliverer.

  • The Outcome: Despite Pharaoh’s cruelty, “the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out” (Exodus 1:12).

Message References:

Primary Scripture Reference: Exodus 1
  • Exodus 1:1–7: The fulfillment of God’s promise to multiply the descendants of Abraham.

  • Exodus 1:8–14: The rise of a new regime and the beginning of Israel’s misery and hard labor.

  • Exodus 1:15–21: The courageous civil disobedience of the midwives who chose to honor life.

  • Exodus 1:22: Pharaoh’s final desperate decree to cast all Hebrew sons into the Nile.

Three Powerful Truths for Hard Times

Pastor Chuck Swindoll highlights three timeless principles to encourage believers facing their own “seasons of misery”:

  1. Hard times do not erase God’s promises: Even in slavery, God was fulfilling His word to make Israel a great nation.

  2. Harsh treatment does not escape God’s notice: God saw the labor of His people and the integrity of the midwives.

  3. Heavy tests do not eclipse God’s concern: The darkness of Exodus 1 was the backdrop for the light of the Exodus.
