Let’s Talk about Our Walk

Overview:

Romans 8:1–10

Everybody dreams of a fulfilled life—one that results in our reaching maximum potential with only a minimum amount of conflict and stress. But as we learned in Romans 7, such dreams are more ideal than real. Nevertheless, we still long to be less frustrated and less anxious in our walk with the Lord. Who doesn’t desire greater balance and more consistency? But is that possible? God’s answer is yes, but the outworking of His answer calls for drastic changes in our mental attitudes and the breaking of long-standing habits. These alterations that lead to an abundant life are humanly impossible; we simply cannot pull it off, no matter how hard we try! But Romans 8 offers good news: the fulfilled life is divinely possible through the power of Him who lives within us. The secret lies in simply allowing Him to take control and change our walk.

Message Summary:

In the message “Let’s Talk About Our Walk,” Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the practical outworking of the Christian faith as detailed in the book of Ephesians. After establishing the believer’s high position in Christ in the first three chapters, the apostle Paul transitions to the “walk”—the daily, visible conduct of the believer. Swindoll emphasizes that our “walk” must match our “wealth” in Christ. The sermon provides a detailed look at the “put off/put on” principle, explaining that spiritual transformation involves more than just stopping bad behavior; it requires a radical renewal of the mind and a commitment to walking in unity, holiness, and love.

Message Key Facts:

  • The “Worthy” Walk: The Greek word for “walk” (peripateo) refers to one’s habitual conduct. To walk “worthily” (axios) means to live in a way that balances the scales between our calling and our conduct.
  • The “Put Off / Put On” Dynamic: Swindoll highlights the three-step process of change: laying aside the “old self,” being renewed in the spirit of the mind, and putting on the “new self” created in God’s likeness.
  • Grieving the Spirit: Paul warns that specific behaviors—such as bitterness, wrath, and clamor—actually “grieve” the Holy Spirit who dwells within the believer (Ephesians 4:30).
  • The “Sun” Rule for Anger: The command “do not let the sun go down on your anger” (Ephesians 4:26) provides a practical timeframe for resolving conflict before it turns into a “foothold” for the devil.
  • The Motive of Grace: The ultimate motivation for forgiveness and kindness is the fact that “God in Christ also has forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:32).

Message References:

  • Ephesians 4:1–3: The call to walk in a manner worthy of the calling, characterized by humility, gentleness, and patience.
  • Ephesians 4:22–24: The core theological instruction regarding the “old self” and the “new self.”
  • Ephesians 4:25–29: Practical examples of the walk: speaking truth instead of lies, managing anger righteously, and working instead of stealing.
  • Ephesians 4:30–32: The warning against grieving the Spirit and the command to replace bitterness with kindness and forgiveness.
  • Colossians 3:8–10: (Contextual) Paul’s parallel instruction on laying aside the old nature and its practices.

Foundational Truths for Believers

Chuck Swindoll identifies four essential principles for maintaining a healthy and holy spiritual walk:

1. Our Position Must Dictate Our Practice

The Christian life is not about “becoming” someone new, but “acting like” the person God has already made us in Christ. We don’t walk to get a calling; we walk because we have a calling.

2. Transformation Begins in the Mind

The “middle step” of change is being “renewed in the spirit of your mind.” Behavior modification is temporary; only a mind saturated with the Word of God can produce a lasting change in character.

3. Spiritual Health is Relational

The “walk” is primarily seen in how we treat others. Our holiness is measured by our honesty, our anger management, our speech, and our capacity to forgive those who have wronged us.

4. The Holy Spirit is a Person, Not a Power

Because the Spirit is a person, He can be “grieved” (pained or saddened) by our sin. A sensitive walk is one that prioritizes the comfort and pleasure of the Holy Spirit over the satisfaction of our own fleshly impulses.

Practical Application

  • Perform a “Walk” Audit: Read through Ephesians 4:25–32 slowly. Identify one specific behavior (e.g., “unwholesome word” or “bitterness”) that is currently out of alignment with your calling in Christ.
  • Practice the “Put Off / Put On” Strategy: Today, when you are tempted toward an old habit, don’t just try to stop. Specifically “put off” the old thought and “put on” a corresponding truth or action from the Word.
  • Clear the “Anger Calendar”: Before you go to bed tonight, ensure there is no unresolved anger or bitterness in your heart. If necessary, make a phone call or send a text to initiate reconciliation.
  • Filter Your Speech: Before you speak, apply the test of Ephesians 4:29: Is it good for edification? Does it give grace to those who hear? If not, choose the “new man” discipline of silence.
