Judgment for the Judgmental

Overview:

We’re all stuck in a spiritual jail with no way out. Our depravity makes us all guilty and without excuse before God.

Romans 2 focuses on the righteous judgment of God. Pastor Chuck Swindoll teaches that God alone knows the hearts of all people. He is the righteous judge, not us.

Acknowledge your need for a Savior. Stand before Him in humility. Instead of judging others, lean on the grace of God!

Message Summary:

While Romans 1 focuses on the “down-and-outer,” Romans 2 turns its attention to the “up-and-outer”—the moralist or religious person who feels superior to others. In “Judgment for the Judgmental,” Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the trap of hypocrisy and the impartiality of God’s justice.

Swindoll explains that pointing out the sins of others does not excuse our own. In fact, Paul argues that those who judge others are actually condemning themselves, because they practice the very things they criticize. This message dismantles the false security of self-righteousness, revealing that God judges according to truth, according to deeds, and according to the secrets of the heart. The only way out of our “spiritual jail” is to stop playing the judge and start acknowledging our desperate need for a Savior.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Hypocrisy Trap: Judging others is often a psychological shield used to ignore our own moral failures.

  • God’s Impartiality: Unlike human systems, God does not show favoritism based on religious heritage or social standing; He judges every soul with perfect equity.

  • The Purpose of Kindness: Swindoll highlights Romans 2:4, noting that God’s kindness and tolerance are not meant to be taken as approval of sin, but are intended to lead us to repentance.

  • Internal vs. External: God’s judgment extends beyond outward actions to the “secrets of men”—the hidden motives and thoughts that no human judge can see.

Message References:

Primary Scripture References

  • Romans 2:1–3: The indictment of the judgmental person who condemns others while doing the same things.

  • Romans 2:4–5: A warning against confusing God’s patience with His permission, and the danger of a “stubborn and unrepentant heart.”

  • Romans 2:6–11: The principles of God’s impartial judgment based on an individual’s actual deeds and heart condition.

  • Romans 2:16: The reminder that God will judge the hidden secrets of every person through Christ Jesus.

Core Principles for Life

  1. Look in the Mirror First: Before criticizing the behavior of someone else, honestly evaluate your own life. We are often most annoyed by the sins in others that we struggle with ourselves.

  2. Don’t Presume on Grace: God’s patience in your life is an opportunity for change, not a license to continue in sin. Use the time He has given you to repent rather than to judge.

  3. God is the Only Qualified Judge: Because only God knows the full truth and the hidden motives of the heart, we should resign from the position of “Judge” and leave that role to Him.

  4. Trade Judgment for Humility: The more we understand the depth of our own depravity, the less likely we are to look down on others. True spiritual growth is marked by increasing humility and a greater reliance on God’s mercy.
