Overview:

Deuteronomy 6:1–13; Ecclesiastes 4:9–12

We can draw some relevant analogies between the ancient Hebrews and our modern-day churches. In the process, we will discover that even though centuries separate us, some of the same struggles, solutions, attitudes, and principles fit our situations perfectly. The people who entered the land of Canaan—the “new generation” of wilderness wanderers—were forced by the sheer determination of survival to pull together, to lock arms and link hearts, as they took on the challenge of invading the land under Joshua’s leadership. Sufficiently prepared by Moses before his death, the people committed themselves to the tough task of conquering Canaan, which they accomplished with the sovereign assistance of Jehovah. Divided, they could never have done it. Unified, they were strong. The same is true for churches today.

Message Summary:

In “Getting Closer, Growing Stronger,” Pastor Chuck Swindoll draws powerful parallels between the ancient Hebrews entering the Promised Land and the modern-day church. He explores how the “new generation” of Israelites, led by Joshua, transitioned from wilderness wanderers to a unified force capable of conquering Canaan. The message emphasizes that while centuries separate us from the Hebrews, the principles of unity, collective survival, and spiritual preparation remain essential for the strength and health of the church today.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Power of Unity: The Israelites’ success in Canaan was predicated on their ability to “lock arms and link hearts.” Swindoll argues that a divided church is inherently weak, while a unified body is resilient.
  • A New Generation’s Challenge: The sermon focuses on the transition of leadership from Moses to Joshua and how a new generation must take ownership of their faith and mission.
  • Sovereign Assistance: While human determination and unity were necessary, the conquest of Canaan was ultimately achieved through the “sovereign assistance of Jehovah.”
  • Modern Analogy: Modern churches face “Canaan-like” challenges that require the same level of commitment to mutual support and biblical principles.

Message References:

Deuteronomy 6:1–13

  • Focus: The importance of keeping God’s commandments and passing them down to future generations to ensure longevity and prosperity in the land.
  • Application: Spiritual strength begins with a heart fully committed to the Lord and a home/church dedicated to teaching His truth.

Ecclesiastes 4:9–12

  • Focus: The value of partnership and community (“Two are better than one”).
  • Application: This passage highlights the practical necessity of companionship and mutual help in overcoming life’s trials and spiritual battles.

I am an intern Bible school student now, and I've been reading the book Improving Your Serve. I considered the book as God's resource for me to learn that there are struggles and pain in serving Him, from rejection and from other people's criticism. As a young lady who wants to serve God, the book added to my courage knowing that God holds my victory. —V. C. from The Philippines
