Delighting in Your Children

Overview:

1 Thessalonians 2:5–12

We have spent quite a bit of time focusing on the demanding and difficult challenges of rearing children: acknowledging depravity, confronting defiance, addressing disobedience, and dealing with rebellion. According to the psalmist, God gives us each child as “a gift,”—not as a challenge. In fact, “the fruit of the womb is a reward”—not a problem (Psalm 127:3).

While parents need to stand firm on issues that call for a strong hand, disciplining children must never eclipse delighting in them! Woven throughout the fabric of Scripture are numerous words and statements underscoring the importance of not only expressing but also demonstrating affirmation, encouragement, gentleness, fun, tenderness, and affection. Let’s turn our attention to those all-important attitudes and actions that bring joy and build esteem as we cultivate an atmosphere of harmony and pleasure in the home.

Message Summary:

In this refreshing installment of the Biblical Parenting series, Pastor Chuck Swindoll addresses a common pitfall for conscientious parents: becoming so focused on discipline and correction that they lose the ability to simply enjoy their children. Having spent significant time addressing the “hard” side of parenting—confronting depravity and defiance—Chuck refocuses our hearts on the biblical perspective that children are fundamentally a reward, not a problem.

“Delighting in Your Children” explores the radical shift in home atmosphere that occurs when parents view their children as a “gift of the Lord” (Psalm 127:3). Chuck provides practical wisdom on how to cultivate a home defined by warmth, approval, and joy. This message is a call to move beyond “policing” our children and start “prizing” them, ensuring that they grow up in the light of their parents’ genuine delight.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Gift vs. The Challenge: While parenting involves difficult challenges, the Bible identifies children as a “heritage” and a “reward.” Our primary lens should be one of gratitude rather than frustration.
  • The “Grimness” of Legalistic Parenting: When parents become obsessed with external behavior and perfection, the home becomes a place of grim duty. Delight is the antidote to a legalistic spirit.
  • The Power of the Countenance: A parent’s face tells a story. Chuck highlights the importance of a “cheerful face” in making a child’s heart glad (Proverbs 15:13).
  • Affirmation over Agitation: A child who feels delighted in is far more resilient and open to correction than one who feels they are constantly a source of agitation to their parents.

Message References:

Introduction: Balancing the Parenting Scales

  • Context: Chuck reflects on the intensity of previous messages on discipline and the danger of becoming “one-sided” in our approach to raising kids.
  • Theme: Transitioning from the duty of correction to the delight of connection.

Building on a Divine Foundation

  • Scripture: Psalm 127:1–2
  • Fact: Unless the Lord builds the house, the laborers work in vain. Parenting is not a project of human effort alone; it requires rest and trust in God’s provision.
  • Insight: We can delight in our children because we trust God with their ultimate development.

Redefining the Child’s Identity

  • Scripture: Psalm 127:3–5
  • Fact: Children are a “gift” and “the fruit of the womb is a reward.”
  • Theme: If you view your child as a problem to be solved, they will feel like a burden. If you view them as a gift to be opened, they will feel like a treasure.

The Impact of a Joyful Environment

  • Scripture: Proverbs 15:13, 15
  • Fact: “A joyful heart makes a cheerful face… the cheerful of heart has a continual feast.”
  • Insight: Your children should see your face light up when they enter the room. This “continual feast” of approval builds lasting security.

Practical Ways to Show Delight

  • Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 2:7–8
  • Fact: Paul describes his ministry as being like a nursing mother tenderly caring for her own children.
  • Summary: Delight is shown through shared time, gentle touch, and words of genuine admiration that have nothing to do with performance.

Conclusion: The Legacy of Approval

  • Final Thought: Discipline without delight leads to rebellion. Delight without discipline leads to indulgence. The goal is a “Grace Awakening” that holds both in perfect balance.
  • Call to Action: Find three things today that you genuinely enjoy about your child and tell them—unconditionally.

Insight for Living Broadcast

I've been listening to the story of Jonah, particularly of his stubbornness and his disobedience. Pastor Chuck, I was acting like Jonah, and I am stubborn. When I decided to obey, God was there. I believe that God wanted me to experience the blessing of obedience. Thank you for your teachings. God bless you always. —C. G.
