Overview:

Genesis 17:1–5, 9–10, 15–19, 21–22

After 13 years of silence, during which Abram had to learn to wait on God’s timing, the Lord finally appeared with changes and challenges. God changed Abram’s and Sarai’s names to Abraham and Sarah, instituted the mark of circumcision, and extended promises that would make any levelheaded person laugh in disbelief. Yet Abraham’s faith and obedience reflected a man who had cultivated deep roots in his relationship with God. The Patriarch’s time in silence wasn’t wasted. Through his example, we can learn how to quiet ourselves, listen to God’s voice, overcome doubts, and step out in obedience.

Message Summary:

In this message, Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores a pivotal turning point in Abraham’s journey—a moment that followed thirteen years of divine silence. During this time of waiting, Abraham’s faith was tested and his roots with God were deepened. When the Lord finally appeared, He introduced significant changes, including new names for the Patriarch and his wife and the institution of the covenant mark of circumcision.

Through the life of Abraham, we learn that periods of silence in our lives are not seasons of stagnation. Instead, they are opportunities to quiet our souls, listen for God’s voice, and prepare for the next step of obedience. This sermon provides a roadmap for anyone feeling “stuck” in a season of waiting, showing how to cultivate a faith that is deeply rooted and ready to respond when God calls.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Purpose of Silence: The thirteen-year gap in the narrative suggests that God uses periods of quiet to mature our character and strengthen our trust in His timing.

  • Identity and Name Changes: God changed Abram (“Exalted Father”) to Abraham (“Father of a Multitude”) and Sarai to Sarah, emphasizing that His promises redefine who we are.

  • The Mark of the Covenant: The introduction of circumcision was a physical reminder of a spiritual reality—that Abraham and his descendants belonged to God.

  • Deep Obedience: Abraham’s immediate response to God’s difficult and often unbelievable promises reflects a man whose roots were firmly planted in the character of God.

Message References:

  • Genesis 17:1–5, 9–10: The account of God appearing to 99-year-old Abraham, establishing the covenant, and changing his name.

  • Genesis 17:15–19, 21–22: God’s promise that Sarah would bear a son and the specific timeline of Isaac’s birth.

  • Colossians 2:6–7: A New Testament connection regarding the importance of being “rooted and built up in Him” and “established in the faith.”

  • Psalm 46:10: Supporting the theme of quieting ourselves to “know that I am God.”
