Overview:

Paul desires for all Christians to experience God’s leading and fearless intimacy with Him every day. While not always easy, choosing obedience and Spirit-led living brings blessing.

Tune in to hear Pastor Chuck Swindoll teach how a Spirit-controlled mind-set leads to abundant life (Romans 8). Examine the changes that occur when the Holy Spirit is in control of your life.

Give God full control. Prioritize obedience and let Him sanctify you.

Message Summary:

In “Cultivating a Spirit-Controlled Life,” Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the vital shift from living under the control of the “flesh” to living under the leadership of the Holy Spirit. Drawing from Romans 8, Swindoll clarifies that the Christian life is not about trying harder in our own strength, but about surrendering to the divine influence within us.

The message highlights the “mind-set” of the believer—showing that where we set our focus determines the quality of our spiritual walk. A Spirit-controlled life is characterized by peace, abundant life, and a fearless intimacy with God as our “Abba, Father.” By prioritizing obedience and allowing the Holy Spirit to lead, Christians can move from a state of spiritual struggle to one of sanctified victory.

Message Key Facts:

  • The New Mind-Set: The sermon contrasts the “mind set on the flesh” (which leads to death) with the “mind set on the Spirit” (which leads to life and peace).

  • Adoption as Sons: A major theme is our identity as children of God; we have not received a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but a spirit of adoption.

  • The Assurance of the Spirit: Swindoll explains how the Holy Spirit “testifies with our spirit” that we belong to God, providing an internal certainty that transcends our feelings.

  • Intimacy with God: The use of the term “Abba” signifies a level of close, personal, and fearless intimacy that only those controlled by the Spirit can truly experience.

Message References:

Primary Scripture References

  • Romans 8:5–6: The contrast between the fleshly mind and the spiritual mind: “For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace.”

  • Romans 8:14–16: The definition of being led by the Spirit and the reality of our adoption as God’s children.

  • Galatians 5:16–25: A supporting text often used to illustrate the conflict between the Spirit and the flesh and the resulting “fruit of the Spirit.”

Core Principles for Life

  1. Surrender Control: Spiritual growth begins when we stop trying to manage our lives and give God full control. Sanctification is the work of the Spirit, but it requires our cooperation through surrender.

  2. Focus Your Mind: What you dwell on, you will eventually follow. Cultivating a spiritual life requires intentionally setting your thoughts on things above rather than on earthly desires.

  3. Reject the Spirit of Fear: Because we are adopted by God, we no longer have to live in the shadow of guilt or fear. We can approach God with the confidence of a loved child.

  4. Listen for the Lead: Being “led by the Spirit” is a daily, moment-by-moment experience. It involves staying sensitive to the internal “promptings” of the Spirit that align with God’s Word.

Insight for Living Broadcast

I didn't know much about grace, so I decided to read The Grace Awakening. I have learned a lot about letting people be different than me and realizing that God's grace doesn't condemn me but rather forgives and covers me with His righteousness! I shouldn't be a perfectionist because I can never do everything perfectly. If I let God work through me though, I will be living a life pleasing to Him! —T. Z. from Oklahoma
