Overview:

While challenges are inevitable for any church, the early church especially faced them. But their faith withstood the trials of persecution from without and corruption from within. How did it do it? Join Pastor Chuck Swindoll as he walks us through Acts 4–6. Learn how a growing church can remain faithful to God and effective in its calling regardless its circumstances.

Message Summary:

In this insightful message, Chuck Swindoll explores the growing pains of the early church as recorded in Acts 4, 5, and 6. He begins by establishing that the inerrancy and authority of the Word of God is the “watershed issue” for every generation; to weaken the Word is to begin the erosion of the church. Chuck defines the church not as an organization to be managed by worldly systems, but as a living organism that must remain “spiritual and simple.” The sermon emphasizes that the church’s strength is found in its distinctive identity—staying “out of step” with the world while remaining deeply engaged with the people in it.

The narrative tracks the three-fold challenges faced by the first-century believers: external persecution, internal hypocrisy, and administrative neglect. Chuck details the sobering account of Ananias and Sapphira, noting that God dealt severely with hypocrisy to preserve the purity of the young “organism.” As the church grew, a new struggle emerged regarding the fair distribution of food, threatening to distract the apostles from their primary calling. The solution—the selection of seven men of high integrity to handle administrative tasks—provides a timeless model for church leadership: protecting the priority of the Word and prayer so that the ministry can continue to expand and multiply.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Watershed Issue: Chuck argues that the primary issue for the church is the authority of the Bible. He uses the metaphor of the Word cutting through life “like a hot knife through butter.”
  • Aping the World System: A warning against the church trying to “ape” or mimic the world’s corporate structures and marketing tactics. Chuck calls for a return to a “unique and authentic” ministry model.
  • The Case of Ananias and Sapphira: The sermon examines the first internal threat to the church: hypocrisy. Chuck notes that they didn’t have to give the money, but their sin was “faking it” to look more spiritual than they actually were.
  • The Selection of the Seven: When administrative needs threatened to pull the apostles away from the Word, they didn’t try to do it all. They delegated responsibility to men “full of the Spirit and wisdom,” allowing the leaders to focus on prayer and the ministry of the Word.
  • “Keep it Simple, Keep it Spiritual”: Chuck’s concluding motto for a healthy church. He emphasizes that prayer is a “radical interference of the status quo” that keeps a ministry aligned with God’s power rather than human effort.

Message References:

  • Acts 4:13–31: The account of the apostles’ boldness before the council and the church’s prayer for even greater courage.
  • Acts 5:1–11: The severe judgment on Ananias and Sapphira for their conspiracy to lie to the Holy Spirit.
  • Acts 6:1–7: The organizational crisis regarding the Hellenistic widows and the subsequent appointment of the seven deacons.
  • 2 Timothy 3:16–17: The foundational truth that all Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for bringing believers to maturity.
  • Romans 12:1–2: The exhortation to not be conformed to the world’s “mold” but to be transformed by the renewing of the mind.
