Bringing Grace Up Close

Overview:

More than 300 years ago, John Bunyan wrote his immortal work The Pilgrim’s Progress. It’s the fascinating story of one man’s pilgrimage from earth to heaven and the numerous obstacles he encounters along the way. Those familiar with the story have no trouble remembering the pilgrim’s name: Christian. However, most don’t recall that Christian’s given name was Graceless.

All of us who claim the name of Christ as Savior have a similar story. Our name is now Christian, but it was not always so. Before Christ became part of our lives, we were people who lacked grace. Unfortunately, there are some whose names have been changed—who have believed in Christ as Savior—and yet their lives remain graceless.

As you listen to this lesson, stop and ask yourself, Am I one of them? Keep your answer in mind as you discover the impact grace can make in a person’s life . . . especially in areas where virtually everyone struggles.

Message Summary:

In this pivotal message from The Grace Awakening series, Pastor Chuck Swindoll moves grace from a theological concept to a personal reality. Drawing a parallel to John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress, Chuck reminds us that while the protagonist’s name was Christian, his original name was “Graceless.” This serves as a metaphor for the believer’s journey: though we are saved by grace, we often continue to live “gracelessly” in our attitudes toward others and ourselves.

“Bringing Grace Up Close” explores how the unmerited favor of God should permeate the most difficult areas of our lives—our friction points in marriage, our responses to criticism, and our struggle against legalism. Chuck challenges listeners to examine whether they have truly embraced a “Grace Awakening” or if they are still living under the heavy, demanding thumb of modern-day Pharisaism.

Message Key Facts:

  • The “Graceless” Origins: Every believer begins as “graceless.” The transformation into a “Christian” is not just a title change but a call to adopt the character of the One who is full of grace and truth.
  • Legalism vs. Grace: Legalism is external compliance driven by the fear of being shunned; grace is internal transformation driven by the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • Grace as “Fuel”: Grace is not merely the “fire insurance” that saves us from judgment; it is the daily fuel that enables us to endure trials and treat others with kindness they don’t deserve.
  • Magnetic Ministry: A life or ministry defined by grace possesses a “magnetic charm” that invites people in, whereas legalism drives people away through pettiness and negativity.

Message References:

This breakdown follows the logical progression of the message to help listeners navigate the biblical exposition.

Introduction: The Identity of the Pilgrim

  • Fact: Chuck references John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress, highlighting that the character “Christian” was originally named “Graceless.”
  • Theme: The transition from a life without grace to a life defined by it.

The Theology of Proximity: Grace in the Flesh

  • Scripture: John 1:14, 16–17
  • Fact: Grace was not just a word; it “became human” in Jesus Christ. We receive “one gracious blessing after another” from His abundance, not through the Law of Moses.

Portrait of Grace: The Woman Caught in Adultery

  • Scripture: John 8:1–11
  • Fact: Jesus provides the ultimate “up close” look at grace by refusing to condemn someone the religious establishment wanted to stone. Grace restores where the Law restricts.

The Risk of Liberty

  • Scripture: Galatians 5:1, 13
  • Fact: Embracing grace is “risky” because it removes external control and relies on the Holy Spirit. However, grace provides a stronger motivation for holy living than legalistic rules ever could.

Transforming the “Friction Points”

  • Scripture: Titus 2:11–12
  • Fact: The grace of God “trains us” to renounce ungodliness. It is the “oil” for the friction points in marriages and relationships, freeing partners from pettiness.

Conclusion: A Giant Leap Toward Maturity

  • Summary: When we bring grace up close, we spend less energy being critical of others’ choices and more energy reflecting the character of Christ.

Insight for Living Broadcast

Whenever I'm going through something, your sermons/talks give me such strength to make it through the day. I listen most every day at work (with my headphones on) but I notice that it helps me stay focused and calm hearing you speaking the words that God wants me to hear for that moment in time. So again, thank you! —A.R. from Massachusetts
