Overview:

Exodus 14

As the Israelites camped near the Red Sea, the stakes had never been higher. They had escaped their brutal captors only to find themselves vulnerable in the wilderness with the Egyptians in pursuit.

Pastor Chuck Swindoll points out that God deliberately led the Israelites into an impossible situation in Exodus 14 —being surrounded with no way out. Yet, that was exactly how God would ultimately protect them and work a colossal miracle.

Maybe it’s your inclination to panic when you’re in trouble. Listen in and discern how God often moves outside of our understanding!

Message Summary:

In this twelfth message of the series Moses: A Man of Selfless Dedication, Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores one of the most miraculous and physically impossible moments in the Bible: the crossing of the Red Sea. Trapped between Pharaoh’s approaching army and a massive body of water, the Israelites faced a crisis of faith. This study of Exodus 14 reveals that God often deliberately leads His people into “impossible” situations to demonstrate His power and to teach us to trust Him when there is no human way out.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Divine Trap: God instructed the Israelites to camp at Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, deliberately placing them in a position where they appeared “entangled in the land” to lure Pharaoh into a final confrontation.

  • The Egyptian Pursuit: Pharaoh pursued the Israelites with 600 select chariots and all the other chariots of Egypt, fueled by a hardened heart and a desire to reclaim his slave labor.

  • The People’s Panic: Seeing the Egyptians, the Israelites cried out in fear, accusing Moses of bringing them into the wilderness to die.

  • The Miraculous Deliverance: As Moses stretched out his hand, God used a strong east wind to divide the waters, allowing the Israelites to cross on dry ground while the returning waters consumed the Egyptian army.

Message References:

Primary Scripture Reference: Exodus 14
  • Exodus 14:1–4: God’s strategic plan to gain glory over Pharaoh through the location of Israel’s camp.

  • Exodus 14:10–12: The Israelites’ reaction of terror and their sentimental longing for their former bondage in Egypt.

  • Exodus 14:13–14: Moses’ historic command: “Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord… The Lord will fight for you while you keep silent.”

  • Exodus 14:21–31: The parting of the sea, the safe passage of Israel, and the total defeat of the Egyptian forces.

Lessons for the “Impossible” Moments of Life

Pastor Chuck Swindoll identifies four principles for believers facing their own “Red Sea” crises:

  1. Impossible Situations are God’s Specialties: When you are hemmed in on all sides, remember that God is not trapped. He often allows us to reach the end of our resources so we can experience the beginning of His.

  2. Panic is the Enemy of Faith: The Israelites’ first instinct was to blame their leader and retreat to their past. Faith requires us to look past the “chariots” and focus on the Deliverer.

  3. The Importance of Standing Still: Moses didn’t tell the people to fight or to flee; he told them to stand still. Sometimes the greatest act of faith is to wait quietly for God to move.

  4. Obedience Precedes the Miracle: Moses had to stretch out his staff before the waters parted. We must take the step of obedience God has already given us before we see the supernatural breakthrough.

Insight for Living Broadcast

I looked you all up on Spotify and clicked on the Insight for Living link. It hit me like a brick in the face; the title of the very top episode was "Dealing with Discouragement." I listened to the episode on my drive home. I 100% believe it was God speaking to me and bringing me back from a life in darkness. I felt like it was God telling me, "This is the path and plan I have for you so keep going." —R. Y. from Georgia
