Being Transformed

Overview:

Acts 9:1–22

There is nothing as miraculous as the turning of a soul from death to life in Jesus. And the more notorious the person who turns, the more skepticism we tend to have. “Is she really saved?” “He’s gonna have to prove to us that he is really living for Jesus now!”

From Martin Luther’s reformation to Chuck Colson’s freedom from the prison of sin, God’s mercy and miraculous salvation have been displayed in the most unlikely people. However, no one was more unlikely than Saul of Tarsus.

In Acts 9, Saul was in hot pursuit of Christians located miles away from Jerusalem, in Damascus. Saul was in hot pursuit of Christians, but God pursued him even more relentlessly. Saul’s own words in Acts 22:3–5, Acts 26:9–11, Galatians 1:13–14, and I Timothy 1:13 serve as a confession, as he describes his former ruthlessness in stark relief to the great grace of God.

Message Summary:

In the message "Being Transformed," Pastor Chuck Swindoll addresses the turning point of the book of Romans. After eleven chapters of profound theological doctrine, the apostle Paul moves into practical application, urging believers to live out their faith. Swindoll explains that a life of transformation is not fueled by guilt or legalism, but by a response to the "mercies of God." The sermon explores the dual command to resist the "mold" of the world and to experience a radical, internal metamorphosis through the renewing of the mind. By surrendering the body as a living sacrifice, believers are empowered to discern and demonstrate the perfect will of God in their daily lives.

Message Key Facts:

  • The "Therefore" Bridge: Romans 12:1 serves as a bridge between the foundational theology of Romans 1–11 (justification, sanctification, and election) and the ethical duties of Romans 12–16.
  • The Motivation: The basis for our surrender is not the threat of judgment, but the "mercies of God"—the vast array of spiritual blessings detailed in the previous chapters.
  • The Living Sacrifice: Unlike Old Testament sacrifices that were killed, the believer is called to be a "living" offering, a paradox that suggests a continuous, daily surrender of one’s physical presence to God.
  • The World’s Mold: Swindoll often highlights the J.B. Phillips translation: "Don't let the world around you squeeze you into its own mould." This reflects the external pressure to conform to secular values.
  • The Metamorphosis: The Greek word for "transformed" (metamorphoo) describes a change in nature from the inside out, similar to a caterpillar becoming a butterfly.

Message References:

  • Romans 12:1: The call to present our bodies as a holy and acceptable sacrifice, which is our "reasonable service."
  • Romans 12:2: The prohibition against being conformed to this world and the command to be transformed by the renewing of the mind.
  • Romans 1–11: (Contextual) The comprehensive list of God’s mercies that provide the foundation for Christian living.
  • 1 Peter 1:14: (Contextual) A parallel warning against being conformed to the lusts of one’s former ignorance.

Foundational Truths for Believers

Chuck Swindoll identifies four essential principles for experiencing a transformed life:

1. Surrender is a Logical Response

In light of all God has done for us, presenting our lives to Him is not "extraordinary" service; it is the only "reasonable" (rational) response. Total surrender is the starting point of spiritual maturity.

2. Resistance is a Daily Requirement

The world system is a powerful force that seeks to dictate how we think, speak, and value things. Transformation requires an active, daily resistance to these external pressures to avoid being "squeezed" into the world's mold.

3. Renewal is an Internal Process

Lasting change does not come from changing our environment or simply trying harder to follow rules. It comes from "renewing the mind"—changing the way we think by saturating our minds with the truth of Scripture.

4. Transformation Leads to Discernment

The goal of a renewed mind is the ability to "prove" or verify God’s will. As we are transformed, we gain the spiritual capacity to recognize God's direction and experience His will as "good, acceptable, and perfect."

Practical Application

  • Perform a "Mercy Review": Spend time reflecting on Romans 1–8. Make a list of the "mercies" God has given you. Let that list be the motivation for your commitment this week.
  • Audit Your Influences: Identify one specific area where the world is trying to "squeeze" you into its mold (e.g., consumerism, anxiety, or pride). How can you resist that specific pressure today?
  • Practice Daily Presentation: Each morning, specifically "present" your eyes, ears, mouth, and hands to God as tools for His service. Say, "Lord, this body belongs to You today."
  • Saturate the Mind: Choose one verse or passage that addresses an area where you need transformation. Meditate on it throughout the day to begin the "renewing" process of your mind.

Insight for Living Broadcast

I didn't know much about grace, so I decided to read The Grace Awakening. I have learned a lot about letting people be different than me and realizing that God's grace doesn't condemn me but rather forgives and covers me with His righteousness! I shouldn't be a perfectionist because I can never do everything perfectly. If I let God work through me though, I will be living a life pleasing to Him! —T. Z. from Oklahoma
