Overview:

1 Timothy 3:3–7

You can’t escape it: a Christian’s conduct matters . . . greatly. Christ’s reputation is on the line, and nonbelievers are watching. This makes God’s “gamble” seem crazy—that sinful, Spirit-filled people are called to lead His church. Is it any wonder then that He decrees that His leaders be above reproach? Not at all. In lesson 7 we looked at the first two verses of 1 Timothy 3 and seven character qualities every overseer must demonstrate. In this lesson, we’ll explore verses 3–7 and seven more character traits. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Paul continued to set forth in plain, uncomplicated language the non-adjustable, non-alterable essentials of God’s standard for church leadership.

Message Summary:

In this eighth message of the series Excellence in Ministry: Starting Strong, Pastor Chuck Swindoll continues his exposition of the biblical requirements for church leadership. Focusing on 1 Timothy 3:3–7, this study examines the second half of God’s “non-adjustable” checklist for overseers. Because the reputation of Jesus Christ is linked to the conduct of those who lead His church, these character traits are essential safeguards for the integrity of the ministry and its witness to the nonbelieving world.

Message Key Facts:

  • The High Standard: God requires church leaders to be “above reproach,” a standard that protects the church from scandal and ensures a credible witness to “those outside.”

  • Leadership and the Home: A man’s ability to lead the church is directly connected to his ability to manage his own household. If he cannot lead his family with dignity, he is deemed unfit to care for the family of God.

  • The Danger of Pride: A new convert is barred from the office of overseer to prevent them from becoming “conceited” and falling into the same judgment as the devil.

  • The External Witness: An overseer must have a good reputation even among non-Christians, preventing the ministry from falling into “reproach and the snare of the devil.”

Message References:

Primary Scripture Reference: 1 Timothy 3:3–7

  • 1 Timothy 3:3: The negative prohibitions: not addicted to wine, not pugnacious (violent), but gentle, peaceable, and free from the love of money.

  • 1 Timothy 3:4–5: The domestic requirement: managing his own household well and keeping his children under control with all dignity.

  • 1 Timothy 3:6: The maturity requirement: not a new convert (neophyte).

  • 1 Timothy 3:7: The public requirement: having a good reputation with those outside the church.

The Final Seven Traits of an Overseer

Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores these seven specific character essentials for those in leadership:

  1. Not Addicted to Wine: A leader must be under the control of the Holy Spirit, not under the influence of substances that impair judgment.

  2. Not Pugnacious: A godly leader is not a striker or a bully; they do not use physical or verbal force to get their way.

  3. Gentle and Peaceable: Instead of being argumentative, an overseer is characterized by a yielding, kind, and non-contentious spirit.

  4. Free from the Love of Money: The motivation for ministry must be service, not financial gain. A leader’s heart must be detached from materialism.

  5. A Skilled Home Manager: Success in the home is the prerequisite for success in the church. Leadership begins with the spouse and children.

  6. Spiritual Maturity: Character takes time to forge. A leader needs the “seasoning” of time to avoid the trap of pride that often catches the young or inexperienced.

  7. Respected by the Community: A leader’s life must be consistent. What they preach on Sunday must be matched by how they conduct business and relationships on Monday through Saturday.

Insight for Living Broadcast

I didn't know much about grace, so I decided to read The Grace Awakening. I have learned a lot about letting people be different than me and realizing that God's grace doesn't condemn me but rather forgives and covers me with His righteousness! I shouldn't be a perfectionist because I can never do everything perfectly. If I let God work through me though, I will be living a life pleasing to Him! —T. Z. from Oklahoma
