An Autopsy of Depravity

Overview:

Like an attorney in a courtroom, Paul responded to objections from religious Jews and presented his case against humanity. He proved the pervasiveness of sin with logic and the Old Testament Scriptures.

Join Pastor Chuck Swindoll in a look at Romans 3. Examine our lifeless condition without Christ and assess the situation for yourself.

There is only one hope for a dead person, only one solution for sin: Jesus Christ!

Message Summary:

In “An Autopsy of Depravity,” Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the final section of Paul’s opening argument in Romans 3:1–20. Like a skilled attorney, Paul presents a conclusive case that leaves the entire world—religious and irreligious alike—silent before God’s judgment. This message serves as a spiritual “autopsy,” dissecting the pervasive nature of human sin.

Swindoll explains that sin is not merely a series of bad choices, but a total condition that affects every part of the human experience: the mind, the throat, the feet, and the heart. By quoting a “string of pearls” from the Old Testament, Paul proves that “there is none righteous, not even one.” The goal of this autopsy is not to cause despair, but to strip away all false hope in human effort, leading us to realize that our only hope for life is found in Jesus Christ.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Pervasiveness of Sin: Paul’s argument concludes that sin has infected all of humanity; no one is exempt, regardless of their religious heritage or moral effort.

  • A Courtroom Drama: The message frames Romans 3 as the closing argument of a divine trial where the “defendant” (humanity) is found guilty on all counts.

  • The Purpose of the Law: Swindoll clarifies that the Law was never intended to save us; its function is to provide the “knowledge of sin” and to stop every mouth from making excuses.

  • Total Depravity: The autopsy reveals that apart from God’s grace, human beings lack the desire to seek God or do good according to His holy standard.

Message References:

Primary Scripture References

  • Romans 3:1–9: Paul’s response to various objections regarding the advantage of the Jews and the faithfulness of God.

  • Romans 3:10–12: The indictment of human character: “There is none who understands, there is none who seeks for God.”

  • Romans 3:13–18: The dissection of human conduct, from deceitful speech to the path of destruction and the lack of the fear of God.

  • Romans 3:19–20: The final verdict: all the world is accountable to God, and no one will be justified by works of the Law.

Core Principles for Life

  1. Stop Making Excuses: The first step toward grace is silence. When we stop trying to justify ourselves or compare our “goodness” to others, we are finally ready to receive God’s mercy.

  2. Understand the Law’s True Role: Don’t look to the Ten Commandments or religious rules as a way to earn heaven. Look to them as a mirror that shows your need for a Savior.

  3. Recognize the Depth of the Problem: Humanity isn’t just “sick” and in need of a doctor; we are spiritually “dead” and in need of a Resurrector.

  4. Turn to the Only Solution: The autopsy proves that there is no life within us. We must look outside of ourselves to the righteousness that comes only through Jesus Christ.

Insight for Living Broadcast

I am an intern Bible school student now, and I've been reading the book Improving Your Serve. I considered the book as God's resource for me to learn that there are struggles and pain in serving Him, from rejection and from other people's criticism. As a young lady who wants to serve God, the book added to my courage knowing that God holds my victory. —V. C. from The Philippines
