Overview:

Selected Proverbs and Ephesians 6:1–4

As we continue this series, we need to be reminded of the often unmentioned benefits of reproof. No one could question or deny the benefits of divine reproofs, which we read of in various places in the Scriptures. For example: “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor faint when you are reproved by Him; for those whom the Lord loves He disciplines. . . . All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness” (Hebrews 12:5–6, 11).

The same could be said of human reproofs, especially those that come from those within our family. How valuable were those words of correction from our parents as we were growing up! In a similar way, how beneficial loving reproofs can be between husbands and wives!

Unfortunately, reproofs are often stated too strongly and are ill timed, unwisely spoken, and lacking in understanding. Those reproofs, rather than bringing benefit, cause painful offenses. Now, let’s get our arms around the value of “speaking the truth in love” so that helpful insight makes us aware of our “blind spots,” resulting in needed changes.

Message Summary:

In this tenth message of the Biblical Parenting series, Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores a topic that is often difficult for both parents and children to navigate: reproof. While we often focus on how to give correction, Chuck shifts the perspective to the essential spiritual discipline of receiving it. He argues that the ability to accept reproof from those who love us is a primary mark of spiritual maturity and a vital component of healthy family life.

Drawing a parallel between divine discipline and human correction, Chuck unpacks the truth found in Hebrews 12—that while discipline is never joyful in the moment, it is designed to yield the “peaceful fruit of righteousness.” This message serves as an invitation to lower our defenses and recognize that the “faithful wounds of a friend” are far more valuable than the “deceitful kisses of an enemy.”

Message Key Facts:

  • The Benefit of Divine and Human Reproof: Just as God disciplines those He loves for their benefit, human reproof from a trusted loved one is a tool for growth, not a weapon for destruction.
  • The “Sorrowful” Process: Chuck acknowledges the emotional reality of correction. It is inherently sorrowful and uncomfortable, yet this discomfort is the “training” necessary for character development.
  • Faithful Wounds vs. Deceitful Kisses: Following the wisdom of Proverbs, the message contrasts honest, corrective love with shallow, enabling flattery.
  • The Goal of Righteousness: Reproof is never an end in itself; its goal is always restoration, holiness, and a “peaceful” life.

Message References:

Introduction: The Necessity of Correction

  • Context: Chuck discusses our natural human resistance to being told we are wrong.
  • Theme: Recognizing reproof as a necessary ingredient for a life of wisdom.

The Divine Pattern of Discipline

  • Scripture: Hebrews 12:5–6
  • Fact: The Lord disciplines those He loves. To be without discipline is to be treated as an illegitimate child rather than a true son or daughter.
  • Insight: Discipline is a proof of belonging and a sign of God’s commitment to our maturity.

The Emotional Reality of Reproof

  • Scripture: Hebrews 12:11
  • Fact: “All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful.”
  • Theme: Validating the pain of correction while keeping the focus on the “afterwards”—the fruit that follows.

The Value of Honest Friends and Family

  • Scripture: Proverbs 27:6
  • Fact: “Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.”
  • Insight: Love that refuses to reprove is not true love; it is neglect. True love has the courage to speak hard truths.

The Fruit of a Teachable Spirit

  • Scripture: Proverbs 13:18; 15:31–32
  • Fact: Whoever heeds life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise.
  • Summary: Ignoring reproof leads to poverty and shame, but accepting it leads to honor and understanding.

Conclusion: Becoming “Trained” by Grace

  • Final Thought: Reproof only works if we are “trained by it.” This requires a humble heart that values growth more than being right.
  • Call to Action: Thank someone today who has had the courage to tell you a hard truth in love.
