A Truth You Dare Not Dismiss

Overview:

What comes to mind when you think about God? His love? His mercy? His grace? His power?

What about His sovereignty? The idea that God is in total control of everything may be a comforting thought for some and a frightful thought for others. Regardless, it’s a biblical truth we dare not dismiss.

Come alongside Pastor Chuck Swindoll to learn about the great blessings that come from acknowledging and embracing God’s sovereignty.

Message Summary:

In this climactic message, Chuck Swindoll addresses a doctrine that often causes believers to “cringe” or back away in fear: the sovereignty of God. While the previous study focused on the “treasure” of God’s providence—how He works all things together for our good—this message focuses on the “truth” of God’s absolute, unshared authority. Chuck admits that for over twenty years of his own ministry, he was afraid of this term, fearing that embracing God’s total control would kill his zeal for evangelism or make him passive in his faith. However, he discovered that the opposite is true. By exploring the “Crescendo of Truth” in Romans 11:33–36, Chuck reveals that God’s sovereignty is not a cold, deterministic prison, but a source of profound peace that kills worry and fuels a life of authentic worship.

The core of this teaching explores the “inscrutable” and “unsearchable” nature of God’s ways. Chuck argues that the Holy Spirit provides a “Resident Dynamic” that allows us to find rest in the mystery of God rather than demanding an explanation for every trial. He observes that we live in an age that demands clarity and logic, but God remains a God of “shock and awe” whose mind is beyond human tracking. By shifting our perspective from “Why is this happening?” to “Who is in charge?”, the believer moves away from the exhausting effort of managing life’s details and into the “quiet calm” of trusting the One from whom, through whom, and to whom are all things.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Fear of Sovereignty: Chuck opens with a personal confession, admitting his long-standing “theological hang-up” with the word sovereignty. He feared it would lead to a “passive” lifestyle or a loss of passion for the lost. He explains that once he finally “let God be God,” the result was a radical transformation of his inner life—replacing worry with a settled confidence that God has every detail of his plan covered and beautifully coordinated.
  • The “Crescendo” of Romans: Chuck describes the first eleven chapters of Romans as a massive theological mountain. Chapter 11 serves as the summit, and verses 33–36 are the “Hallelujah Chorus” or the “Crescendo of Truth” that Paul breaks into after explaining God’s plan for both Jews and Gentiles. It is the moment where logic gives way to wonder, and theology turns into doxology.
  • The “Depth of Riches” vs. Human Poverty: Chuck highlights the phrase “Oh, the depth of the riches.” He contrasts the infinite knowledge and wisdom of God with the finite, often “poverty-stricken” logic of man. He notes that the Spirit’s work is to “illuminate” the fact that God’s bank account of wisdom is never empty, providing us with a “dynamic” of stability when our own resources have run dry.
  • Inscrutable and Unsearchable: A major highlight is Chuck’s analysis of these two “weighty” words. “Inscrutable” (anexereunētos) means impossible to track or investigate to the end, while “unsearchable” (anexichniastos) means impossible to unfathom or “trace out.” Chuck uses the metaphor of a ship in the ocean: we see the wake on the surface, but we cannot see the path the ship took through the depths. This validates the mystery of the “Malta” and “shipwreck” experiences in our lives.
  • The Three Prepositions of Life: Chuck unpacks the “three pillars” of verse 36:
    1. From Him: He is the Source of all things; nothing originates outside of His decree.
    2. Through Him: He is the Means of all things; He is actively sustaining the world and our lives second-by-second.
    3. To Him: He is the End of all things; the ultimate goal of history is His glory, not our convenience.
  • The Harbor Pilot of Mystery: Revisiting the central series analogy, Chuck describes the Spirit as the “Pilot” who navigates us through the “fog of the inscrutable.” When we are prone to wander into the “scales of unbelief” because we can’t see the path ahead, the Spirit reminds us that the Pilot knows the waters. The truth we dare not dismiss is that the Pilot is not just guiding the ship; He owns the ship and the sea.

Message References:

  • Romans 11:33–36: The primary text for the study. Chuck walks through the “depth” of God’s wisdom, the three rhetorical questions regarding the mind of the Lord, and the final declaration of God’s total authority over all things.
  • Romans 8:28–30: The “tandem” text. Chuck links the “Golden Chain” of salvation to the “Crescendo” of sovereignty, showing that providence and sovereignty are two sides of the same glorious coin.
  • Lamentations 3:21–24: The “Minor Key” of faithfulness. Chuck notes that even when God’s ways are unsearchable, His “compassions fail not” and are “new every morning,” providing the emotional filter we need to endure.
  • Isaiah 55:8–9: A confirmation of the “inscrutable” nature of God: “My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways.” Chuck uses this to show that God is not a “bigger version of us” but is qualitatively different in His wisdom.
  • Job 42:1–6: The conclusion of Job’s trial. Chuck points out that Job’s peace didn’t come when he got his questions answered, but when he “saw” God’s sovereignty and “repented in dust and ashes.”
  • Psalm 139:23–24: The prayer of surrender. Chuck concludes by encouraging the listener to stop dismissing the truth of God’s control and instead invite the Spirit to “search” and lead them in the “way everlasting.”

I didn't know much about grace, so I decided to read The Grace Awakening. I have learned a lot about letting people be different than me and realizing that God's grace doesn't condemn me but rather forgives and covers me with His righteousness! I shouldn't be a perfectionist because I can never do everything perfectly. If I let God work through me though, I will be living a life pleasing to Him! —T. Z. from Oklahoma
