Overview:

2 John

There are few words that better characterize Scripture than balance. Time after time we see a balanced reminder of warning and encouragement, grace and truth, doctrine and practice, dos and don’ts. This observation comes through loud and clear in the “postcard” written by the apostle John to a lady and her family. Although tiny and obscure, the second letter of John still penetrates our hearts and minds today. This postcard provides instruction in the area of discernment by reinforcing the importance of both love and truth. While commending the lady and her family for walking in the truth (2 John 1:4–5), John exhorted her to be on alert for deceivers and to refuse hospitality to false teachers (1:7–11). Just as a river without the boundaries of the shorelines can become a devastating force, love without discernment can sweep away the reality of sin and the power of grace. John’s letter to a lady and her children provides for us guidance as we seek to balance truth and love.

Message Summary:

In “A Postcard to a Lady and Her Kids,” Pastor Chuck Swindoll addresses the second “divine postcard” of the New Testament—the letter of 2 John. This brief but potent message centers on the vital necessity of balance in the Christian life, specifically the harmony between walking in truth and walking in love. John commends a godly woman and her family for their commitment to the gospel but quickly shifts to a stern warning about the dangers of spiritual “open-mindedness” that lacks discernment. The sermon emphasizes that while love is the badge of the believer, it must be protected by the boundaries of biblical truth to prevent deceivers from compromising the faith of the household.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Recipient: Addressed to “the chosen lady and her children.” While scholars debate if this refers to a specific individual or is a personification of a local church, the application remains focused on the domestic and communal protection of the faith.
  • The Central Theme: The interdependence of Love and Truth. Swindoll notes that truth without love is harsh, while love without truth is directionless.
  • The Threat: “Deceivers” (Antichrists) who had gone out into the world, specifically those denying the physical incarnation of Jesus Christ (the doctrine that Jesus came in the flesh).
  • The Limit of Hospitality: In a culture where hospitality was a sacred duty, John provides the radical instruction to deny “house room” or even a greeting to those who deliberately spread false doctrine regarding the person of Christ.
  • The “River” Analogy: Love is compared to a river, and Truth to its banks. Without the banks of truth, the river of love becomes a destructive flood rather than a life-giving stream.

Message References:

  • 2 John 1:1–3: The greeting which establishes that love is grounded “in the truth” and is shared by all who know the truth.
  • 2 John 1:4–6: The commendation for “walking in truth” and the reminder of the “new yet old” commandment to love one another.
  • 2 John 1:7–9: The warning against deceivers and the definition of an “antichrist” as one who denies Christ’s humanity.
  • 2 John 1:10–11: The specific prohibition against supporting or welcoming false teachers, lest one participate in their “evil deeds.”
  • John 14:6: (Contextual) Jesus’ own claim to be “the Way, the Truth, and the Life,” which serves as the foundation for John’s narrow definitions.

Foundational Truths for Believers

Chuck Swindoll identifies several pillars of spiritual maturity derived from this postcard:

1. The Necessity of Discernment

Being a “loving” Christian does not mean being a “gullible” one. Discernment is the ability to distinguish between the Spirit of Truth and the spirit of error. Believers must test every message against the person and work of Jesus Christ.

2. The Danger of “Progressive” Theology

John warns against those who “run ahead” (2 John 1:9) and do not abide in the teaching of Christ. True spiritual progress is found in going deeper into the established truth of the Gospel, not in moving past it into “new” or “modern” interpretations that contradict Scripture.

3. Love is Not a Feeling, but a Walk

Scriptural love is defined as “walking according to His commandments.” It is an active, obedient lifestyle that prioritizes God’s standards over human sentiment.

4. Protecting the Home

The letter highlights the responsibility of the “lady of the house” (and all parents) to guard the entrance to the home. What we allow into our minds and our living rooms—through media, guests, or philosophy—has a direct impact on the spiritual health of the next generation.

Practical Application

  • Audit Your “Hospitality”: In a modern context, this includes the voices you welcome into your home via the internet, podcasts, and books. Do these voices “abide in the teaching of Christ”?
  • Balance Your Scales: Are you someone who tends to be all “Truth” (judgmental/cold) or all “Love” (compromising/soft)? Ask the Holy Spirit to help you develop the “other side” of your Christian character.
  • Learn the Fundamentals: To spot a counterfeit, you must know the genuine. Commit to a deeper study of the deity and humanity of Jesus so you can immediately recognize when He is being misrepresented.
  • Walk in Joy: John concludes by desiring that our “joy may be made full.” Full joy is found only when we are living in the security of the Truth and the warmth of Love simultaneously.

I am an intern Bible school student now, and I've been reading the book Improving Your Serve. I considered the book as God's resource for me to learn that there are struggles and pain in serving Him, from rejection and from other people's criticism. As a young lady who wants to serve God, the book added to my courage knowing that God holds my victory. —V. C. from The Philippines
