Overview:

Acts 5:14–42; 1 Peter 5:1–11

How would you define hope? In what way would your definition apply to a local church? What if hope were missing from a congregation? Would anybody notice? We’ll think about these and other things as we allow Peter’s words to guide us into the truth about hope. Of special interest are the essentials involved in keeping a church’s hope strong and constant. These passages of Scripture suggest several ingredients that must be present if hope is to remain a vital part of a church’s life.

Message Summary:

In this message, Pastor Chuck Swindoll addresses the critical “vital sign” of any healthy church: Hope. Just as a body cannot survive without a functioning heart, a congregation cannot thrive without a vibrant, active hope in Jesus Christ. Using the early church in Acts as a blueprint and Peter’s pastoral exhortations as a guide, Chuck identifies the essential ingredients that keep hope strong even under pressure. This sermon serves as a spiritual “operation,” removing the despair of religious routine and transplanting a fresh, courageous expectation of God’s power and presence within the local church.

Message Key Facts:

  • Hope as a Church Vitality Marker: Hope is not just a personal feeling but a collective atmosphere. Chuck argues that a church without hope is merely a social club; a church with hope is a beacon of transformation.

  • The Role of Leadership in Hope: Drawing from 1 Peter 5, Chuck emphasizes that leaders must shepherd the flock “willingly” and “eagerly,” serving as examples of hope rather than lords over the people. Hopeful leadership trickles down to a hopeful congregation.

  • Resilience Under Persecution: In Acts 5, the apostles faced imprisonment and floggings, yet they left “rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name.” Chuck illustrates that true biblical hope is not based on favorable circumstances but on an unwavering commitment to the Gospel.

  • The Power of the Holy Spirit: Hope remains strong when a church relies on the Spirit’s power rather than human programs. The early church’s explosive growth was fueled by a supernatural hope that defied logical explanation.

  • Vigilance Against the Adversary: Chuck reminds the church that “hope” requires alertness. Peter warns believers to be of sober spirit because the adversary prowls like a roaring lion. Hope is a proactive defense, not a passive sentiment.

Message References:

  • Acts 5:29: The foundational stance of a hopeful church: “We must obey God rather than men.”

  • Acts 5:41: The evidence of hope: rejoicing in the midst of suffering for the name of Christ.

  • 1 Peter 5:2–3: The instructions for leaders to lead with a heart of service and hope.

  • 1 Peter 5:7: The practical application of hope: “casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.”

  • 1 Peter 5:10: The promise of hope: that God will Himself “restore, confirm, strengthen and establish” His people.

I am an intern Bible school student now, and I've been reading the book Improving Your Serve. I considered the book as God's resource for me to learn that there are struggles and pain in serving Him, from rejection and from other people's criticism. As a young lady who wants to serve God, the book added to my courage knowing that God holds my victory. —V. C. from The Philippines
