Overview:

Exodus 16–17

On the heels of seeing their enemies defeated and crossing the Red Sea in a monumental and miraculous way, the Israelites still wavered in their faith.

Exodus 16–17 records the story of an impatient people who longed for the familiarity of captivity. Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the Israelites’ complaints in the wilderness. They couldn’t grasp God’s history of providing for them and lived solely by their feelings.

Take away valuable lessons from the Israelites’ example as you cling tightly to God’s record of faithfulness even when times are hard!

Message Summary:

In this thirteenth message of the series Moses: A Man of Selfless Dedication, Pastor Chuck Swindoll examines the persistent struggle between human desire and divine provision. Only weeks after witnessing the miraculous parting of the Red Sea, the Israelites found themselves in the Wilderness of Sin, complaining about their lack of food and water. This study of Exodus 16 and 17 reveals the danger of living by feelings rather than faith and highlights God’s gracious response to His people’s “earthly appetites.”

Message Key Facts:

  • The Conflict: Despite their recent deliverance, the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, sentimentally longing for the “fleshpots” of Egypt where they at least had bread to the full.

  • The Heavenly Bread: God responded by raining “bread from heaven” (manna) each morning and providing quail in the evening.

  • The Regulations: Manna was to be gathered daily—only enough for that day—to test whether the people would walk in God’s law and trust His daily provision.

  • Water from the Rock: When the people thirsted at Rephidim, God commanded Moses to strike the rock at Horeb, and water gushed out to quench the nation’s thirst.

Message References:

Primary Scripture Reference: Exodus 16–17
  • Exodus 16:2–3: The people’s complaint and their distorted memory of the “good life” in Egyptian captivity.

  • Exodus 16:4–15: The introduction of manna, described as a “fine, flake-like thing,” and the instructions for gathering it.

  • Exodus 17:1–7: The incident at Massah and Meribah, where Moses struck the rock to provide water for the complaining congregation.

  • Exodus 17:8–13: The battle with Amalek, where Israel prevailed as long as Moses held up his hands with the staff of God.

Lessons on Daily Dependence

Pastor Chuck Swindoll draws out timeless principles for those navigating their own “wilderness” seasons:

  1. Don’t Let Your Feelings Rewrite Your History: The Israelites remembered Egypt’s food but forgot its whips. When we are frustrated, we often romanticize a past that God has already delivered us from.

  2. Gather Your “Manna” Daily: God provided food one day at a time to teach Israel daily dependence. We cannot live today on yesterday’s spiritual strength; we must seek God’s provision every morning.

  3. Grumbling is a Rejection of God’s Sovereignty: Moses reminded the people that their complaints were not ultimately against him, but against the Lord. Gratitude is the antidote to an earthly appetite.

  4. Victory Comes Through Sustained Prayer: The battle with Amalek was won not just by Joshua’s sword, but by Moses’ raised hands. We need the support of others (like Aaron and Hur) to keep our hearts focused on God during the fight.

Insight for Living Broadcast

Whenever I'm going through something, your sermons/talks give me such strength to make it through the day. I listen most every day at work (with my headphones on) but I notice that it helps me stay focused and calm hearing you speaking the words that God wants me to hear for that moment in time. So again, thank you! —A.R. from Massachusetts
