Why Bother to Battle?

Overview:

Jude 5–16

When a man named Jude sat down one day in the first century to record some thoughts about the Christian life, he suddenly changed his mind. Instead of presenting a calm, calculated explanation of our walk with Christ, he unloaded a blistering exposé of apostasy, exhorting his readers to “contend earnestly for the faith” (Jude 1:3). Because God led Jude to change his message, today we have this postcard of helpful guidelines on how to stand firm against the tempting trends of our times. Unlike many today who tolerate heresy to keep the peace, Jude demonstrated clearly that the battle for truth demands our effort.

Message Summary:

In "Why Bother to Battle?", Pastor Chuck Swindoll introduces the urgent message of Jude by addressing the foundational question: Why must believers engage in spiritual conflict? While Jude originally intended to write a letter celebrating the "common salvation" shared by all believers, he was redirected by the Holy Spirit to issue a call to arms. This sermon focuses on the mandate to "contend earnestly for the faith," explaining that the battle is not against people, but for the preservation of divine truth against subtle, internal compromise. Swindoll emphasizes that the integrity of the gospel is worth defending because it is the only message that offers eternal life.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Shift in Purpose: Jude expresses a desire to write about the joys of salvation but feels a divine "necessity" to write a warning instead (Jude 1:3).
  • The Definition of "Contend": The Greek word used is epagonizomai, from which we get "agonize." It implies a strenuous, determined effort, much like an athlete in a contest.
  • The "Unnoticed" Entry: The primary danger identified is not an external frontal assault, but "certain persons" who have "crept in unnoticed" (Jude 1:4).
  • The Nature of the Faith: The "faith" is described as a body of truth that was "once for all handed down," meaning it is complete and not subject to human revision.
  • The Grace Perversion: The false teachers are identified by their tendency to turn the grace of God into "licentiousness"—using God's kindness as a license for immoral behavior.

Message References:

  • Jude 1:1–2: The greeting, establishing the believer's identity as "called," "beloved," and "kept."
  • Jude 1:3: The core command of the book to "contend earnestly for the faith."
  • Jude 1:4: The description of the opposition: ungodly persons who deny the Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
  • Titus 2:11–12: (Contextual) Paul’s definition of grace as that which instructs us to deny ungodliness, contradicting the apostates' view.
  • 2 Timothy 4:7: (Contextual) Paul’s reflection on having "fought the good fight" and "kept the faith."

Foundational Truths for Believers

Chuck Swindoll outlines why this "battle" is a non-negotiable part of the Christian life:

1. Truth is a Sacred Deposit

The gospel is not a human invention; it is a divine trust handed down from God to the apostles, and then to us. We are not owners of the truth, but stewards who are responsible for its purity.

2. Apathy is the Ally of Apostasy

False teaching thrives in environments where believers are spiritually lazy or overly "open-minded" without discernment. To "bother to battle" means shaking off apathy to guard the church's doctrinal foundations.

3. Grace and Holiness are Inseparable

Any teaching that suggests God's grace makes holiness unnecessary is a dangerous counterfeit. True grace empowers obedience; it does not excuse rebellion.

4. The Lordship of Christ is the Ultimate Standard

The final mark of a "crept-in" teacher is the denial of the "only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ." If a teaching diminishes the authority or the person of Jesus, it is an enemy of the faith.

Practical Application

  • Examine Your "Spiritual Agony": When was the last time you felt a deep, "agonizing" concern for the purity of the truth being taught in your circles? Ask God to renew your passion for biblical integrity.
  • Spot the "Creepers": Be observant of subtle shifts in language—where "sin" becomes "mistakes" or "Lordship" becomes "suggestion." Discernment begins with noticing the small changes.
  • Study the "Standard": You cannot defend what you do not know. Recommit to a systematic study of the "once for all" faith so you can recognize when it is being compromised.
  • Focus on Being "Kept": Remember Jude's opening: you are "kept for Jesus Christ." The battle is intense, but your security is not based on your strength, but on His holding power.

Insight for Living Broadcast

I looked you all up on Spotify and clicked on the Insight for Living link. It hit me like a brick in the face; the title of the very top episode was "Dealing with Discouragement." I listened to the episode on my drive home. I 100% believe it was God speaking to me and bringing me back from a life in darkness. I felt like it was God telling me, "This is the path and plan I have for you so keep going." —R. Y. from Georgia
