When the Faithful Fail

Overview:

Genesis 12:7–20

What courage it must have taken for a 75-year-old man to pull up his tent pegs and strike out by faith. What a model of faith! But we must not forget that he was still fully human. When we look more closely at Abram, we begin to see his imperfections. We realize this icon of faith had feet of clay. When a famine hit, rather than standing firm in faith and trusting his God to sustain him and his wife, he fled to Egypt. We can learn lessons from faithful Abram’s temporary and tragic slump into deceit and disobedience.

Message Summary:

In this message, Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the human side of the great Patriarch, Abram. While history remembers him as an icon of courage who struck out into the unknown at age 75, the biblical account also reveals his "feet of clay." When a severe famine struck the land God had promised him, Abram’s faith wavered. Rather than standing firm and trusting God to sustain him, he fled to Egypt and fell into a tragic slump of deceit.

Abram’s journey into Egypt serves as a realistic warning for every believer. It demonstrates that even those with the strongest faith are susceptible to fear and disobedience when circumstances become dire. This sermon provides vital lessons on the consequences of taking matters into our own hands and the enduring grace of God that restores us even after our most humiliating failures.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Vulnerability of a Hero: Chuck emphasizes that Abram was "fully human," showing that spiritual giants are not immune to temporary lapses in judgment.

  • Famine as a Test: The famine in the Promised Land was a test of faith. Abram’s decision to leave for Egypt without divine direction illustrates the danger of "running ahead of God."

  • The Deception in Egypt: To protect himself, Abram asked his wife Sarai to lie about their relationship, proving that fear often leads to a compromised testimony and the mistreatment of others.

  • God’s Restoring Grace: Despite Abram’s failure and the trouble he brought upon Pharaoh’s house, God intervened to protect the promise, showing that His covenant is grounded in His faithfulness, not ours.

Message References:

  • Genesis 12:7–20: The primary text detailing Abram’s building of an altar, his move to Egypt due to famine, his deception regarding Sarai, and his eventual expulsion by Pharaoh.

  • Psalm 37:23–24: A supporting cross-reference reminding believers that though a righteous man falls, "he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with His hand."

  • 1 Corinthians 10:12: A New Testament warning for those who think they stand firm to "take heed lest they fall."

Insight for Living Broadcast

I am an intern Bible school student now, and I've been reading the book Improving Your Serve. I considered the book as God's resource for me to learn that there are struggles and pain in serving Him, from rejection and from other people's criticism. As a young lady who wants to serve God, the book added to my courage knowing that God holds my victory. —V. C. from The Philippines
