Lessons Learned from Failure

Overview:

Exodus 2:11–25

Moses’ years in the desert after an impulsive decision showed that the process is just as important as the outcome. While in obscurity, Moses was being molded for his life’s greatest assignment—leading a nation!

Drawing from Exodus 2, Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the silver linings of failure, including a newly teachable spirit and a growing desire to live an obedient life.

Glean takeaways from Moses’ life. As you do, you’ll be inspired to wait on God’s timing, God’s plan, and God’s best!

Message Summary:

In this fourth message of the series Moses: A Man of Selfless Dedication, Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the aftermath of Moses' impulsive mistake in Egypt. After fleeing for his life, Moses found himself in the desert of Midian—a place of obscurity that would become God’s classroom for character development. This study reveals that for the servant of God, failure is not an end, but a necessary stage of preparation.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Transition: Moses moved from the "Ivy League" environment of Egypt’s palace to the rugged, lonely life of a shepherd in Midian.

  • The Humble Service: Upon arriving in Midian, Moses displayed a protective spirit by helping the daughters of Reuel (Jethro) at a well, leading to his welcome into their home.

  • The Domestic Life: During this season, Moses married Zipporah and fathered a son named Gershom, whose name means "a stranger there"—reflecting Moses’ own feelings of displacement.

  • The Long Silence: Moses spent 40 years in Midian. This period of "unlearning" was just as vital as his 40 years of "learning" in Egypt.

Message References:

Primary Scripture Reference: Exodus 2:11–25
  • Exodus 2:15: Moses flees from Pharaoh and settles in the land of Midian.

  • Exodus 2:16–20: Moses assists the daughters of the priest of Midian, demonstrating that his heart for justice remained, though his methods were being refined.

  • Exodus 2:21–22: The transition to a quiet, family life in the desert.

  • Exodus 2:23–25: A pivotal reminder that while Moses was waiting, God was listening: "God heard their groaning; and God remembered His covenant."

Takeaways from the Desert

Pastor Chuck Swindoll highlights how God uses failure and obscurity to mold a leader's heart:

  1. A Teachable Spirit: Failure strips away self-sufficiency, making us more reliant on God’s instructions than our own instincts.

  2. The Importance of the Process: We often focus on the outcome (deliverance), but God focuses on the process (the character of the deliverer).

  3. God’s Perfect Timing: While Moses felt forgotten, God was perfectly timing the intersection of His people’s need and His servant’s readiness.

  4. Obedience over Impulses: The desert teaches the vital lesson of waiting for God’s "go" rather than rushing ahead in the flesh.

Insight for Living Broadcast

I've been listening to the story of Jonah, particularly of his stubbornness and his disobedience. Pastor Chuck, I was acting like Jonah, and I am stubborn. When I decided to obey, God was there. I believe that God wanted me to experience the blessing of obedience. Thank you for your teachings. God bless you always. —C. G.
