Overview:

Isaiah 40:27–31; Matthew 6:24–34; Luke 10:38–42; Philippians 4:4–7

We can trace many of our battles with common problems, such as insomnia, obesity, alcohol and drug addiction, pessimism, and headaches to deep-seated unrest in our souls. What nervous, tense creatures we are! Surely God did not design our bodies to endure such self-imposed stress. Nor does this intensity represent the way His children should model His message of peace.

In this message think along scriptural guidelines as we rediscover a life characterized by rest instead of rush, calm instead of confusion, peace instead of panic, tranquility instead of turmoil.

Message Summary:

In "How Can I Win Over Worry?" Pastor Chuck Swindoll addresses the pervasive problem of anxiety and its devastating toll on the human soul and body. Swindoll argues that many common ailments—from insomnia and headaches to deep-seated pessimism—can be traced back to an internal lack of rest. This message explores how God did not design His children to endure constant, self-imposed stress. By examining key scriptural guidelines, Swindoll provides a roadmap to move from a life of rush and panic to one characterized by the peace, calm, and tranquility that comes from a deep trust in God's provision.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Physical Toll of Worry: Modern stress is often self-imposed and manifests in physical symptoms like obesity, addiction, and chronic headaches.
  • The Antidote to Anxiety: Scriptural peace is not just the absence of conflict but a proactive, internal rest found in the character of God.
  • The Danger of Distraction: As seen in the life of Martha, worry is often the result of being "distracted by many things" rather than focusing on the "one thing" that is necessary.
  • The Nature of God's Strength: Isaiah 40 teaches that those who wait upon the Lord find their strength renewed; they do not just "survive" but "soar like eagles."
  • The Command to Rejoice: Philippians 4 presents joy and prayer as the primary weapons against worry, leading to a peace that surpasses all human comprehension.

Message References:

1. The Reality of Our Unrest (Isaiah 40:27–31)

Swindoll highlights how we often feel forgotten by God when we are anxious.
  • The Complaint of the Heart: We mistakenly believe our "way is hidden from the Lord."
  • The Everlasting Source: God does not grow weary or tired; His understanding is inscrutable, making Him the perfect anchor for our unrest.
  • The Promise of Renewal: Strength is not found in striving but in "waiting" (trusting) upon the Lord.

2. The Futility of Worry (Matthew 6:24–34)

Jesus provides the definitive teaching on why worry is both unnecessary and unproductive.
  • The Father's Provision: If God feeds the birds and clothes the lilies, He is certainly committed to caring for His children.
  • The Limit of Human Control: Worry cannot add a single hour to one's life; it only drains the joy from the present moment.
  • The Kingdom Priority: The solution to worry is a shift in focus: "Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness."

3. The Choice of the Better Part (Luke 10:38–42)

The story of Mary and Martha illustrates the relational cost of worry.
  • The Martha Mentality: Being "worried and bothered about so many things" leads to resentment and a loss of perspective.
  • The Mary Perspective: Choosing to sit at the feet of Jesus is the "one thing" necessary to maintain a calm heart in a busy world.

4. The Practical Plan for Peace (Philippians 4:4–7)

The message concludes with Paul’s specific instructions for winning over worry.
  • Constant Rejoicing: Joy is a command, not a feeling. It is a choice to focus on God's sovereignty.
  • Prayer as the First Response: Rather than worrying, we are to bring everything to God through "prayer and supplication with thanksgiving."
  • The Guardian of the Heart: The result is a peace that stands as a sentry over our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Insight for Living Broadcast

I am an intern Bible school student now, and I've been reading the book Improving Your Serve. I considered the book as God's resource for me to learn that there are struggles and pain in serving Him, from rejection and from other people's criticism. As a young lady who wants to serve God, the book added to my courage knowing that God holds my victory. —V. C. from The Philippines
