Death on a Cross

Overview:

John 19:16–37

Though often worn as sparkling jewelry today, during the days when Jesus walked on earth the cross represented not faith but failure, not morality but lawlessness, not respect but unspeakable shame. Yet it’s Christ’s death on the cross that brought about redemption for the world.

Join Chuck Swindoll as he explains how, in the cruel brutality of Christ’s death, there is something beautiful; in the rough-cut wood of the cross, there is something golden and eternal for all who kneel before it in repentance and faith.

Message Summary:

In this solemn message, Chuck Swindoll peels back the layers of history and tradition to reveal the brutal reality of the crucifixion. While the cross has become a polished symbol of faith in the modern era—worn as jewelry or displayed in mosaics—Swindoll reminds listeners that in the first century, it was a "symbol of death, the most hideous anguishing of all kinds," comparable to wearing an electric chair on one’s lapel. The sermon takes a clinical and historical look at the physical toll of Jesus' execution. Swindoll details the "dreadful routine" of Roman justice, from the torture of the scourging room to the humiliating march to Golgotha. He explains the medical reality of crucifixion, noting that victims did not die primarily from blood loss, but from slow asphyxiation, fighting for every breath against paralyzed pectoral muscles. Despite the horror, Swindoll emphasizes that Jesus was not a helpless victim of a failed plan. His death was the predetermined plan of God, prophesied centuries in advance. The message concludes with the medical evidence of Jesus' actual death—the separation of blood and water—refuting skeptics and affirming that the "dearest friend" of humanity paid the ultimate price to open the way to heaven.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Public Nature of the Cross: Unlike modern executions which are private and swift, Roman crucifixion was designed to be public and lingering. It served as a brutal billboard on the outskirts of the city to warn the populace that crime against Rome did not pay.
  • The Horror of Scourging: Before the cross, Jesus endured the "halfway death" of Roman scourging. Unlike Jewish law which limited lashes to 40, Romans had no limit. They used a flagellum—a whip with leather thongs attached to bits of glass, bone, and lead—which reduced the back to strips of raw flesh.
  • The Crown of Thorns: The soldiers mocked Jesus with a crown made of long, hard thorns common to the area. Swindoll notes these thorns could be up to 3 ½ inches long, shoved onto Jesus' head along with a "scepter" made of a reed.
  • The Medical Cause of Death: Swindoll explains that on the cross, the victim settled into a "V" position, causing the pectoral muscles to paralyze. To exhale, the victim had to push up on the nail-pierced feet. Eventually, muscle exhaustion led to death by suffocation.
  • Evidence of Actual Death: When the soldier pierced Jesus' side, "blood and water" flowed out. Swindoll explains this as the release of blood from the heart's chamber and hydropericardium (serum) from the pericardium sac. This separation proved Jesus was physically dead, refuting the "swoon theory" that suggests He merely fainted and revived later.

Message References:

  • John 19:16–37: The primary text detailing the crucifixion, the casting of lots for Jesus’ seamless tunic, and His final words, "It is finished."
  • Acts 2:22–23: Peter’s declaration that Jesus was delivered up by the "predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God."
  • Psalm 22: A prophecy written 950 years prior, predicting hands and feet would be pierced and garments divided.
  • Isaiah 53: Prophecy regarding the Messiah suffering as a lamb led to the slaughter.
  • Matthew 27:26: The account of Pilate releasing Barabbas and ordering Jesus to be scourged.
  • 1 Peter 2:22–23: A description of Jesus' response to the torture: "When He was reviled, reviled not in return".

Insight for Living Broadcast

I didn't know much about grace, so I decided to read The Grace Awakening. I have learned a lot about letting people be different than me and realizing that God's grace doesn't condemn me but rather forgives and covers me with His righteousness! I shouldn't be a perfectionist because I can never do everything perfectly. If I let God work through me though, I will be living a life pleasing to Him! —T. Z. from Oklahoma
