Overview:

1 John 5:1–12

God’s people are identified throughout the Bible by various titles. Among them are Christians, disciples, followers, saints, sheep, salt, light, ambassadors for Christ, members of the body, a royal priesthood, aliens and strangers, servants of Christ, and the people of God—just to name a few. Like a diamond being turned under a bright light, each designation reveals yet another facet of our character, role, position, and/or privilege. Near the end of John’s letter, he introduced two additional titles: “believer” and “overcomer”. And he made readers aware of “three that testify” in full agreement regarding God’s Son (1 John 5:8). All of this deepens our understanding of what it means to be a child of God in His forever family. As we arrive at the last two verses in this section, we come to one of the clearest statements of the gospel found in all the Word of God.

Message Summary:

In this message covering 1 John 5:1–12, Chuck Swindoll explores the essential characteristics of those who are born of God. He begins by establishing the distinct style of the Apostle John, describing him not as arrogant, but as a direct and authoritative teacher—like a favorite professor who speaks with confidence because he has lived nearly a century and walked personally with Jesus [5–8]. Swindoll defines a true "believer" not merely as someone who intellectually agrees with a proposition, but as one who relies on and commits to Jesus Christ, just as a person commits their full weight to a chair [10–11]. Swindoll connects faith to obedience, using the analogy of marriage vows. He argues that God’s commandments are not burdensome to the believer because love prompts obedience; just as a bride and groom do not find their vows irksome on their wedding day, a Christian obeys God out of relational devotion [13–15]. The sermon then transitions to the concept of the "Overcomer." Swindoll explains that believers are "over-conquerors" who face the world's opposition—which often scorns faith in an ancient figure—through the power of the One who is in them [16–18]. The message concludes by examining the three witnesses to Christ’s divinity: the Spirit, the water (His baptism), and the blood (His crucifixion). Swindoll directs the listener to the ultimate binary truth found in verses 11 and 12: Eternal life is a gift found exclusively in the Son. He asserts that there is no middle ground, purgatory, or "almost heaven"; one either possesses the Son and has life, or does not possess the Son and faces a Christless eternity [19–21, 26].

Message Key Facts:

  • Praise vs. Thanksgiving: Swindoll distinguishes between these two acts of worship. In thanksgiving, the believer is in the picture, thanking God for what He has done for them. In praise, the believer is out of the picture, and the focus is entirely on God’s character, glory, and attributes.
  • Defining "Believer": Using John 20:31, Swindoll notes that the Greek word pisteuo appears 98 times in John's Gospel. It implies a complete commitment to a person, not just mental assent to a fact.
  • The Wedding Vow Analogy: Swindoll illustrates that God's commands are "not burdensome" (1 John 5:3) by noting that in all his years of officiating weddings, he has never heard a couple complain that forsaking all others is too hard. Their love makes the commitment a joy rather than a heavy load [13–14].
  • "Hyper-Conquerors": Swindoll cross-references Romans 8:37 to explain the term "overcome." The Greek implies that through Christ, believers "hyper-conquer" or overwhelmingly conquer the world system that opposes their faith [17–18].
  • The Three Witnesses:
    • The Water: Jesus’ baptism, where the Father spoke, and His public ministry began.
    • The Blood: The crucifixion, marking the finished work of salvation.
    • The Spirit: The truth-teller who testifies to the reality of Jesus' identity.
  • Checkpoints for Truth: Swindoll offers two tests for discerning safe teaching: 1) The teacher must hold to the inerrancy of Scripture as the foundation of information, and 2) The teacher must have a high view of Jesus Christ, never softening His deity or His work on the cross.
  • The Andrew Jackson Story: To illustrate the necessity of direct truth, Swindoll tells the story of evangelist Peter Cartwright. When warned not to offend President Andrew Jackson, Cartwright declared from the pulpit, "Andrew Jackson will go to hell if he doesn't repent of his sins." Jackson later respected him for his courage.
  • The Gospel in a Nutshell: Swindoll breaks down 1 John 5:11–12 into three facts:
    1. Eternal life is a gift, not a reward.
    2. Eternal life is sourced in a Person (Jesus).
    3. Eternal life is a present possession held by those who have the Son [24–25].
