Overview:

Genesis 14:1–4, 10–17, 21–24

Countless small-hearted people keep score, hold grudges, and look down on others with critical, envious eyes. They manipulate and control people. Sadly, in our fallen world, small-hearted people are the norm, making the few genuinely greathearted people stand out all the more. They look beyond the past, sacrifice for others, and overflow with humility. All the while, they shun the limelight and give God alone the glory. Among their thin ranks stands Abram, who not only gave his shortsighted nephew the choicest land but also rescued him when his choice got him into trouble! We can learn a lot from Abram, the greathearted.

Message Summary:

In this message, Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the contrast between the "small-hearted" nature of the world and the "greathearted" character developed through faith. While many people are prone to keeping score and holding grudges, Abram stands out as a man of extraordinary humility and sacrifice. Despite being wronged by his shortsighted nephew, Lot, Abram’s response was not one of bitterness, but of courageous rescue and selfless generosity.

Through the narrative of Genesis 14, Chuck highlights how a greathearted person looks beyond past offenses to serve others, shunning the limelight to ensure God alone receives the glory. This sermon provides a practical look at how believers can cultivate a heart that overflows with grace, reflecting the character of the Almighty in a world often dominated by manipulation and control.

Message Key Facts:

  • Greathearted vs. Small-hearted: The sermon contrasts the critical, envious nature of the "small-hearted" with the humility and sacrifice seen in Abram.

  • The Rescue of Lot: Abram’s willingness to risk his life and resources to rescue a relative who had previously taken advantage of him serves as the ultimate proof of his greathearted nature.

  • Rejecting the King's Reward: Abram’s refusal to accept the spoils of war from the King of Sodom demonstrates a heart that is fully dependent on God’s provision rather than earthly wealth.

  • Glory to God Alone: A defining characteristic of the greathearted is the desire to decrease so that God’s reputation may increase.

Message References:

  • Genesis 14:1–4, 10–17: The historical account of the war of the kings and Abram’s successful military rescue of Lot and the people of Sodom.

  • Genesis 14:21–24: Abram’s pivotal interaction with the King of Sodom, where he refuses to take even "a thread or a sandal lace" so that no man could claim to have made him rich.

  • James 2:23: Supporting the idea that Abram’s greathearted actions were the fruit of his unique friendship with God.

  • Philippians 2:3–4: A New Testament connection emphasizing the call to do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but in humility to consider others more important than ourselves.

Insight for Living Broadcast

I've been listening to the story of Jonah, particularly of his stubbornness and his disobedience. Pastor Chuck, I was acting like Jonah, and I am stubborn. When I decided to obey, God was there. I believe that God wanted me to experience the blessing of obedience. Thank you for your teachings. God bless you always. —C. G.
