The Futility of Unscrewing the Inscrutable

Overview:

Job 25–26

Bildad now gave his third and, thankfully, shortest presentation. By now he probably considered Job unteachable, so why waste his “brilliant insights” on the man? He ended his assault by referring to Job as a maggot and a worm. Job then used sarcasm to seize Bildad’s attention. What Job lacked in tact, he made up for in total honesty. He took Bildad through the paces as he communicated a resplendent mosaic of our Lord’s superiority over all. Job’s words revealed that he had a relationship with God that Bildad never heard of, and it was a relationship that allowed Job to be comfortable with the words, “I don’t know.”

Message Summary:

In “The Futility of Unscrewing the Inscrutable,” Pastor Chuck Swindoll explores the final exchange between Job and his friend Bildad in Job 25–26. By this point in the narrative, the “friends” have largely given up on Job, viewing him as unteachable. Bildad ends his final, brief assault by dehumanizing Job, calling him a “maggot” and a “worm.”

Swindoll highlights Job’s sharp, sarcastic, and brutally honest response. Rather than cowering, Job seizes the moment to describe a “resplendent mosaic” of God’s absolute superiority and power over all creation. The message illustrates a profound spiritual contrast: while Bildad relies on cold, religious formulas to explain suffering, Job relies on a deep, personal relationship with God—one that allows him to remain comfortable with the phrase “I don’t know” when faced with the inscrutable mysteries of divine providence.

Message Key Facts:

  • The Shortest Speech: Bildad’s third presentation is the shortest in the book, signaling that the friends’ legalistic arguments are finally running dry.

  • The Power of Sarcasm: Job uses sarcasm not just to vent frustration, but to expose the hollowness of Bildad’s “help” and to refocus the conversation on God’s majesty.

  • God’s Superiority: Job 26 contains a magnificent description of God’s sovereignty over the heavens, the earth, and the “pillars of heaven,” serving as a reminder that His ways are far beyond human measurement.

  • Comfort in Mystery: The sermon defines “heroic endurance” as the ability to trust God’s character even when His specific plans remain inscrutable or unexplainable.

Message References:

Scripture: Job 25–26

  • Job 25:1–6: Bildad’s final argument, focusing on God’s dominion and questioning how any human (the “maggot”) can be righteous before Him.

  • Job 26:1–4: Job’s sarcastic rebuttal: “What a help you are to the weak! How you have saved the arm without strength!”

  • Job 26:7: The poetic description of God’s creation: “He stretches out the north over empty space and hangs the earth on nothing.”

  • Job 26:14: The conclusion of Job’s meditation on God’s power: “Behold, these are the fringes of His ways… but His mighty thunder, who can understand?”

Core Principles for Life

  1. Beware of Dehumanizing Counsel: Be careful of “theology” that reduces people in pain to maggots or worms. True spiritual insight always maintains the dignity of the sufferer.

  2. Admit Your Ignorance: You do not have to “unscrew the inscrutable.” It is a sign of spiritual maturity to say “I don’t know” while still saying “I know the One who does.”

  3. Refocus on God’s Majesty: When human arguments fail to provide comfort, look to the “fringes” of God’s ways in creation. If He can hang the earth on nothing, He can hold your life together.

  4. Trust the Whisper: Job reminds us that we only hear a “whisper” of God’s total power. If the whisper is this magnificent, we can trust the “thunder” of His sovereignty.

Insight for Living Broadcast

I am an intern Bible school student now, and I've been reading the book Improving Your Serve. I considered the book as God's resource for me to learn that there are struggles and pain in serving Him, from rejection and from other people's criticism. As a young lady who wants to serve God, the book added to my courage knowing that God holds my victory. —V. C. from The Philippines
